So there are turntables that will output PCM digital? Guess its doing the equilization and encoding in the table itself.

Interesting. Never heard of such a thing.

That would be perfect for him. The only thing I could think of is it would be dependant on the quality of the encoder. But for this application should be just fine.

Actually I did find some Stanton's with good ratings, and the SPDIF - but they were from $399 to $499 and up. I'll give him all of his options and let him decide. I'm sure he can start with a better table, and the Live! card and if he doesn't find the results satisfactory, he can get a better sound card.

Radio Shack use to or still may do sell a phono preamp for $25 dollars. I used one into a SBlive and used Cool Edit Pro with a LP cleanup plug-in and it work great for me.
