Can I record DirectTV programs, by hooking up just the sat cable w/out the receiver?
Is is possible to find any channels w/out the box?

No. You need a tuner to recieve and decode the stream.

You should wait for the DTV box for a PC if that's what you want. Hopefully, this fall.
