I was going to post a new thread with the OP's question, just happened to scan before posting and make sure I wasn't duplicating an existing thread and viola here it is the last thread of the page ready to disappear.

So, bump for props to Sam25 and the OP, and also to report that free camstudio program is 100% perfectly addresses my needs and works awesome. Thanks!

I'm sorry to talk about Pirated products here.

I've got Vista64 too, so by looks of it, I doubt Fraps will work there.

I think Fraps 2.9.8 will work with Vista 64-bit.

I've used Fraps on Vista 64 business but in Oblivion, not the desktop.

Yes, a 20-sec clip will take 300MB... pretty space-consuming.

Would Fraps work for desktop recording? It's primarily meant to be used with games, but glancing over the site, it looks like it might work for other desktop applications.

I read your comment and actually tried recording my desktop with FRAPS. This is what happened:

The 'Screen capture hot key' did nothing. No screenshots were generated at all. The 'Video capture hot key' on the other hand game me an interesting result. I pressed it and then after a minute or so pressed it back again to stop recording. There was an .avi file generated. The problem is I tried playing that file with some of the players installed on my system but NOT a single player was able to play the .avi file! Can't imagine why?

I've had the same issue with fraps, never actually seen the program work.

I think it may be strictly for directX games.

Another good program is hypercam. I find some of the programs like camtasia tend to crap out on big resolutions, but hypercam seems to do well. It is RAW AVI though, so we're talking GB/sec file sizes here. You'll want access to like 500GB+ of space. You can then do whatever you have to do with the video from there to get it to a smaller size.

It does have a small banner but that can easily be cropped out, just be sure you capture a bit more then what you need.

Well then, that confirms it. Fraps doesn't do screen recording. I've never really tried Hypercam, I'll give it a try. I've used this other software to record gameplay called Game Cam. There is one thing though, Game Cam unlike Fraps has always given me very clear videos when I've recorded gameplay and also the size of the recorded video is much smaller than the videos recorded with Fraps which run into GB's! Any reasons for this?

videos that run into GB's are raw, which is faster to produce (no need to run a live encoder while capturing). You can always run an encoder after to convert to like divX though. I usually work with the raw AVIs in my editing program then when I'm done I do the final render in divX. Some programs like premiere do not like to render in divX so you may have to render the edited video to raw AVI again, then use virtualdub to convert to AVI. I find this stuff can be hit and miss.
