Recommended power supply to Radeon X800 Pro?

Has ATI recommended anything about how strong power supply we are gonna need to their Radeon X800 Pro, as nVidia has done with their GeForce 6800 Ultra?

I'm asking about this since I only have a 300 watt power supply in my computer (with an Athlon XP 2400+ CPU, who is not overclocked) and I'm wondering if I could get one of those Radeon X800 Pro graphic cards when they are out on the market to my computer or if I must buy a new power supply to when I upgrade my graphic card?

What brand is your current PSU?

I would want a good 350watt minimal. But if I were you I wouldn't settle than anything less than 400watt just in case.

Why? According to various articles it uses up just as much (or less) electricity as the 9800 Pro. If your current powersupply is a good brand then it should do the job. However if it is generic I would buy a new one to be safe.

I wouldn't run my current 9800 with a 300 watt. If the PSU did hold, I would imagine only for a short period time. Then instability issues will arise, or even PSU failure. Then you'll have to play the guessing game in which hardware component is causing issues. But I'm also keeping over clocks in mind. He might not overclock as much as I do were would a steady voltage to the motherboard would be extremely important for stability.

I think 300watt's is at the stress point depending on what else he's packing under the case.

ATI recommends a 300Watt or greater PS for the X800XT or PRO, so the PRO is probably fine with it.

My only reccomendation is if you have to upgrade, get a 550w.

With the current trends in power consumption there is no reason not to get one that high, as itll prevent you from having to upgrade it yet again in the near future.

PSU isn't QUITE as big a deal with the x800. It actually draws less power than the previous generation. You could get by with 300 watts, depending on what else you are running.

The X800 Pro consumes less power than even the older 9800XT

Its not about 300 or 400 Watts, since a normal Computer consumes no more than 300 Watts but low standard PSU dont truly give the power written.

I have an unknown brand PSU rating 350 Watts, i bought it for 12 $ new. but i know it doesnt give out 350 Watts, hardly 270 Watts

Hello LTC8K6 (or anyone else that knows something about this).

You wrote that ATI had recommended a 300 watt power supply (or stronger) to their Radeon X800 Pro graphic card and since you seem to be sure about that I wonder where you have looked to find that information, about how strong power supplies ATI?s graphic cards need I mean.

I?m asking since I will also want to check that place out.

thyre recommending a 300watt job....tho id imagine this would have to be a good quality make like antec and probably require that u dont have lots of HDD's n stuff.........but u certainly wont need anything daft like a 480w piece!!! 350w of good quality PSU should do

any 550w power supply you can buy now will be totally usless here soon if you want to use a btx motherboard. besideds, 550w is far more power than most systems need or will need for quite some time.

i'd bet the 300w would be find assumeing it is a quality make, if not upgradeing to a quality 350w or better would surely solve any issues one might have with the above mentioned setup.

The 9800XT & GF 6800 work fine in SFF systems using a ~250w power supply, so a X800 Pro/XT should as well.

ATI, perhaps? 😀

RADEON? X800 PRO and RADEON? X800 XT require a connection to your PC's internal power supply for operation. Consult your system builder or OEM to ensure your system has an adequate power supply. Otherwise, ATI recommends a 300-Watt power supply or greater to ensure normal system operation where a number of other internal devices are installed.

You may want to add getting a quality PSU. Lots of off brand 500+ watters are horrible. Often times under 20A on the 12v. Even some name brands have low 12v, which is not good. Even Antec's only has a 24A 12v. Most hardware runs off of the 12v line, and the more the better. In comparison, my PC Power&Cooling has 34A on the 12v.

Thank you very much LTC8K6 for the link you gave me to where ATI told me about how big power supply I must have to their graphic cards.

Btw, the power supply I have were in the computer case that I bought, who is an AOpen HQ08.

I'm not 100 % sure but (around 99 %) the name on that supply was probably FSP300-60ATV, and a link to that supply comes here.

So, what brand PS do you have then?

I have now opened up my computer and written down all the info that my power supply gave me and that comes here.

Brand: AOpen
Modell: FSP300-BT (12V)

AC Input: 230V 5A
DC Output: + 3.3V 28.0A
+ 5V 30A
+ 12V 15A

+ 5Vsb 2A
- 5V 0.3A
- 12V 0.8A

+3.3V and + 5V = 180 W Max
+3.3V and +5V and + 12V = 280 W Max

And since I don't know if AOpen really makes their power supplies themselves or if they only relabelled another manufactures power supply, I leave it up to you to decide who REALLY made this power supply in the first place.
And if you know something about this I would be happy if you told me about who manufactures AOpens power supplies.
