I am currently building a new system with an Athlon XP1700. Right now I am not overclocking it, but I am still looking for very good cooling. What is the best fan I can get for under $40 that wouls still offer exceptional cooling for my situation?

You cant go wrong with the Thermalright SK-6 and a decent 25+ cfm fan. The Alpha PAL6035 also seems to be a good choice. Vantec and Taisol also make some coolers, but I have yet to memorize their product numbers. :)

I definitely second the Thermalright SK-6

get something like an 80 mm sunon fan and the whole setup will run nice and quiet

I would strongly recommend you consider spending ~$48 for an Alpha PAL8045 + 80mm fan. The heatsink itself is $40, so you can supply your own ~50CFM fan ;)

I agree 100%. You can get it shipped with a fan and 2 day service for $40 here:

SVC Compucycle

You might as well get a tube of AS2 for $5 as you won't find it cheaper than that anywhere else and shipping is flat rate.

I am lookin for good cooling, but would like it relatively quiet as well.

Which 80mm Sunon fan are you referring to as running quiet?

25cfm
39cfm
50cfm

Be aware that the SK6 is designed for 60mm use, not 80mm. You'll need to turn the 80mm 45 degrees to clip it on. For a quiet fan, I suggest the Panaflo L1 or H1 (H1 is a bit louder). Generally, the lower the CFM, the quieter it is.

You need to look for the HSF that uses the newer 70mm fan. The new fan design uses a larger number, 11, of blades to reduce noise without sacrificing performance. Thermal Integration's TI-V77L seems to be the favorite among the reviewers. It has a copper core to enhance heat transfer. The reviews lauds its low noise and put the performance up there with the noisy big boys. It is also AMD certified. Vendor Cooler Star lists all the reviews on the product page. Check them out yourself.

I see that NewEgg has the Vulcano-6Cu with a 7000rpm 38cfm duel ball bearing fan.
for $14.00.

Anygood for overclocking, noise is an issue for me?

Pal 8045 from SVC. I am running my XP 1600@1583 (nice seeing the mobo, wcpuid and 3dmark2001 recognize it as an XP1900 :) right now and I can get this thing over 37c.

Does anyone know if this fan is worth getting for my needs? is it as good as the other recommendations on this post?

Considering your not overclocking and the fact that XP's run cooler the Volcano should be fine. Although, I would highly recommend the SK-6 with a 80mm simply for noise sake. Those 7000rpm fans are LOUD, and I am not exaggerating. I know noise is subjective, but at some point, loud is simply loud no matter who is listening.

I feel troubled by the fact that I'm spending as much on a HSF (Pal8035) as I did on my k7s5a. So much electronics on one and none on the other. Doesn't feel right.....oh well.

What fan would be the best complement to a PAL8045 heatsink, the quietest while still good enough to overclock with? What would be a good minimum CFM?

What motherboard are you planning to use and how experienced are you with building computers? If you are using a ALPHA PAL8045 compliant motherboard and you know what you're doing, I'd say go with the ALPHA PAL8045. You can buy an extremely quiet fan for it and many people love it. If it's not compliant or you dont know what the hell you're doing, I'd say go with the Thermalright SK-6. Buy it along with a 25+cfm fan (such as the Sunon 27cfm) and I'm sure it'll be fine. The good thing about getting either one of those two is that you can just switch the fans if you decide to overclock one day.
