I want to buy a digital camera. I don't know much about them though.
I need something with an LCD so I can view the pic. I want a quality camera.

Any recommendations?

Any sites with reviews/comparisons?

Olympus C3000Z, awesome carmera, I have one. Identical to the C3030Z except the 3030 has a larger ram buffer so I can take longer quicktime movies and more shots in secession

I don't mind dishing out 500 bucks for a phat camera.

What is the deal with the storage types?
Which is the best?

Olympus 490z. Great digital camera for the point and click crowd. I never us the LCD to take pictures. I find the optical view works fine. I do use it to review my picture after I take them.

Oh this site allows you to compare the pics from different cameras side by side.

allow me to talk about my camera...

i picked sony because the memory sticks are the cheapest, compared to the prices of compact flash and smart media...

--

Mister T, remember that you have to spend extra on other things... extra batteries (charger if they are rechargeable), a reader (if necessary), a case for the camera (if necessary), extra memory (which is necessary), uh, um, a slave flash (if necessary, it has been my observation that on-camera flashes suck, and if given a chance for a slave flash, go for it)...

as for money, my sister bought me a sony cybershot 505v, which was $800 online... I SPENT close $600 on accessories... extra memory sticks, extra batteries, a slave flash, lens filters (got a polarizer and a skylight filter)... and i don't even have a tripod of my own, yet...

i recommend a camera with a viewfinder and an LCD...

the viewfinder is more natural if you have a film camera... the LCD is a good way to "zoom" into a picture for viewing...

the LCD will drain power like crazy, as will the flash (another reason for getting a slave flash ;-))

--

oh, go for USB for transferring pics from the camera to the PC. if the camera does not support an ac adapter, get a reader, since the camera does have to be on which does drain batteries.

I agree with the above statement, the Kodak DC4800 (not sure if I got that right) is probably the best deal currently.

I personally have a Kodak DC265, and it's a pretty good camera. Nikon's and Sony's aren't bad either, I haven't had many experiences with the others though.

Nikon. Don't think I have to say more. All of their cameras are at least 2.1 megapixels, so choose the one you like. They all have great image quality.

For $500.00 you should be able to get the Fuji FinePix 40i (double as mp3 player). If you really serious then at $600.00 you could get the Olympus C-2100UZ.

FinePix 40i
4.3 Million Pixel (2400x1800)
3.5X Digital Zoom. :(
1.8 Inch color LCD.
Play Mp3 music. :)
Compact

Olympus C-2100UZ (Ultra Zoom)
1.9 Million Pixel (1600 x 1200)
10X Optical Zoom IS (Aspherics & Image Stablization lens). :) :)
2.7 Digital Zoom (27X max posible zoom)
F2.8-F11 in 13 steps. (very fast lens for digital especialy for a 10X zoom) :)
2 Inch TFT color LCD.

Olympus would be my logical choice because I'm serious regarding photography, but I would take the Fuji if I need a light-weight compact pocket camera.

Alright, thanks for all the info folks... I think I am going to go with the Kodak camera.

403 --- Camera (includes $100 Kodak rebate).... www.photoalley.com
190 --- 64mb Compact Flash, 128mb Compact Flash, and Compact flash reader(includes $20 Viking Rebate for 64mb)... www.newegg.com
85 --- Extra Battery, Charger and Carrying Case.... www.onvia.com
---------------------

About 670 total.

And the camera already comes with a battery, a 16mb Compact Flash Card, and charger...

How many pics can I hold in a total of 188mb Compact flash.

well a 16mb card holds about 15 high res high quality jpgs,
32 high res low quality
25? standard res
~45 low res

188/16 X (setting) = number of pics.

I can vouch for the canon s10... simply amazing..... BUT, it's short coming is the VERY limited 2x zoom... otherwise, quality is superb. Doing 4x6 printouts from shutterfly, no one could tell they were digital... until they picked up the photo and realized the really thin paper it was printed on.. and flipped it over and saw shutterfly :) I have an 8x10 printout of a black 95 rt/10 as well :) Boy does that thing look sweet.

I myself would like to get a olympus 2100uz :) but school has taken one hell of a bite from my "things i want" fund...

My experience w/ kodak is only w/ the dc240, and to me, picture quality was just not there. i do not know about the new 4800 (and the like) series, but they sure look a lot better.

My friend just picked up an olympus d460, and it's pretty nice. Altho, limited to it's serial interface (one thing i wish the 490 would have fixed :()

MDay, you have a Sony 505v. those things look so sharp! your sister actually bought you this?? (i wish my sister was that grateful) i'm gonna wait and see if they come out with a model to follow it up, and think about it.

i think nikons are #1 overall (esp the 880) but sony's new cams are due out very soon.
