Recommendations for web hosting?

Hi I'm a computer science major and I am starting some internships soon and I want to find a good, reliable, and cost-effective host for some code samples and programs I've written. I don't need a huge amount of bandwith or 500 email accounts. I just want some cheap but good web hosting. Any recommendations?

Oh and how does domain name registration work? Can I get it from any of the different registration sites or are some better than others?

avoid ripplehost, lousy service, they basically charged me for nothing and my account was never set up correctly, had to dispute the charge with citibank.
