A friend of mine has two laptops, does a lot of traveling, and is in dire need of a better data-management solution. She has an Apple PowerBook G4 (recently purchased, hence Tiger is installed) as her main/desktop-replacement computer, and a small Sony notebook (700MHz P3) that will be used for traveling.
She has a TON of personal data that she access quite frequently. Right now, it's spread across a couple of computers in various versions, which makes me cringe. 😉 I'd like to set up some type of system that can keep the two laptops in sync, especially when she's using the Sony notebook on the road.
I've thought of a couple of ways to set this up, but am looking for more suggestions. So far, the most workable scenario I've come up with would be to set up a NAS-type device (such as the Linksys NSLU2) with a sizable hard drive on her home network, behind a NAT device that supports VPN. When at home, the the Powerbook would stay sync'ed with the NAS drive (which, in this case, would also act as a redundant backup system as well). On the road, the Sony notebook would attempt to VPN over the Internet and sync the data with the NAS drive.
This seems like a plausible way to keep the latest version of a personal documents folder fresh on more than one computer. Anyone else have any ideas on how to go about doing this? Software/hardware recommendations?
