Recommendations for password protection on site

Sorry, if this is the wrong forum, but I wasn't sure where to go with this one. I need to password protect a portion of my site, and I have NO CLUE how to do it. I'm willing to learn, but I don't even know where to begin. I would like individual user names and passwords...not just one for the whole site. Where in the world do I begin?

I know Google is my friend, but I either didn't like the results, or I wasn't smart enough to comprehend what in the world I was supposed to do! 😱
 
Heisenberg, thanks! Admittedly, it was more than I needed, but it very much got me pointed in the right direction, and I was able to figure out where to look through my provider and got it handled. Thanks a ton!
