total noob here .. actually first time dslr owner 🙂
noticed a smug on my 18-200mm lens yesterday and recommendations on what's the best way to clean it?

Just a simple microfiber cloth at any general store and your breath will do. If you want to go fancy ROR fluid and a microfiber cloth.

I use a $4 box of Kimwipes and a $6 bottle of R.O.R. Both are incredibly cheap, last for years, and work the best at cleaning any kind of optical glass.

I tried microfiber cloths; the problem with them is that the cheap ones leave lint, and the expensive ones eventually get dirty. Kimwipes leave no lint on glass, and you use a fresh one every time you need to clean a lens.

kimwipes are the low-lint stuff used in chemistry labs. they should be perfectly sufficient for optics.

personally, I just use my breath and a clean t-shirt. microfibre cloths and cleaning fluid for lenses is completely unnecessary, IMHO.

ok, had no idea on the kimwipes, heh. and microfibre is nice when your shirt is soaking wet from the rain... heh

Breath + t-shirt or soft shirt is usually ok for me when I'm on the go. Of course I'll go home and inspect for more dust where I can sit down w/ microfiber cloths.

Kimwipes are actually very effective. I've thought of getting them although I would just probably jack some from work. We use them at work to clean certain optics and stuff. I'm almost positive it'll be fine for camera optics.
