recommendations for future gaming rig?

I'm thinking about building a high-end gaming rig over the next few months, and I don't mind taking my time and waiitng for a good deal. I have limited knowledge in doing this though, and was wondering what are people's personal recommendations for brand/model for a system with these ballpark specs (they're what I would like to have eventually):

case (no clue)
fans/cooling (no clue)
motherboard (no clue)
3+ Ghz (32-bit or 64-bit?) (Intel or AMD?)
2 GB RAM (OCZ? Corsair? ...?)
512 MB graphics (ATI? Nvidia?)
X-Fi sound card

i already have a 2005FPW monitor ($400) and a 200GB Seagate disk ($50). i plan to use this system for heavy development work, playing graphics-intensive games, watching DVD's. I'm not really into the flashy cases, overclocking, all that jazz... I wouldn't mind shelling out some extra bucks to get somewhat next-gen technology that won't be outdated too soon. right now, i see there's a pretty good deal on the X-Fi sound card for $90 after rebate... should I buy it? I am not an audiophile, and I feel like that would suit my needs more than enough, yet be able to handle future waves of technology for a few years (hopefully).

i know there are a gazillion sites with reviews and stuff, and i've been reading around and googling... but i'd just like to hear what "real people" have to say about their favorites, and I also want to learn about putting a system together in general.

thanks,
Jason

The way I choose compoents for a system are I set myself a date and a budget and on that date I spend that amount of money on the best I can get for that price.

I would not recommend buying componets over a period of time for the very reason the price trend is for prices to go down and not up.

What is heavy development work by the way? It's a bit like saying I use my computer for computing.

My build I am working on:

Cooler Master Stacker 830
PSU Unsure as of now, leaning towards a very expensive one as I want to spoil myself
7 fans plus the crossflow fan
ASUS board for AMD
AMD 4400+ or 4800+
2 GB OCZ RAM
7900 GTX SLI
X Fi Sound Card
Lite On DVD and DVD R, always had decent luck with them
150 GB Raptor
320 GB WD
Gateway 21" monitor, beautiful with DVI
