Getting a conroe-based rig together, estimated about $200 left for said components.

What brands/models are preferred for these accessories? Post if you've had good experience with one or bad experience with another.

Nothing too fancy, just what works.

I second the NEC drive and the G5 mouse, but I also recommend the Microsoft intellitype Pro keyboard ($50 CND). Microsoft may suxorz at a lot of things, but they are great at making keyboards.

the benq 1655 is better than the liteon. The g5 is VG and can be had for $50 shipped. As for a keyboard, the saiteck eclipse is nice, but any kewboard will do really. To me it doesn't matter.

seriously, you can get the superior g5for $15 more, and unless you are the MOST HARDCORE GAMER EVER!!!!!!! you don't need the g15. The mx518 is actually great i you need more buttons, but the g5 is better overall. The nec is decent as well for $35.

I always recommend taking a look at Plextor for your burner. The PX-716A is still excellent and the PX-760A is the latest. My 712 started out at around $190 - the new models are much more reasonable, but still higher priced than most. IMO, they are worth the extra money. Other brands have come and gone - Plextor remains.

OP asked for recs for a gaming computer. Most gamers like wired mice, mx518 is one of the best. G15 is a gaming keyboard, that lots of people use and like. And all well within his budget. Just my opinion.

I don't game all that much and I am very happy with my G15. Just the programmable buttons and display (especially ID3 info) is worth the extra cost if you ask me.
