Recommendations for a mic/headset

I'm looking for a microphone for gaming, but the thing is I'm
considering 2 options, and I don't know if the first one even exist.

I thought about saving some money and getting just a mic but I was trying to find one
that goes over my ear like a headset but doesn't have drivers just a mic, this way I could
still use my speakers.

The second option would cost more but would be a gaming headset, I know they have 5.1 ones but If I recall correctly I heard from AT that they weren't that great though and stereo headsets were better.

I have speakers and that's why I was considering the first option.

I also have a $50 pair of sealed headphones, so for me to consider the second option the sound of the headset would have to be a little better than my headphones.

I'm not sure how I could wear the zalman mic if I'm not wearing headphones, any suggestions?
 
Plantronics GameComPro1 PC Gaming Headset for $50. Plantronics has been in the headset business far longer than all these up and comer companies who spend big money on marketing. Only reason you don't hear about them much is their target market is businesses and professionals. I'm using the Plantronics DSP-500 PC Headset. Awesome speakers and mic, super comfy, USB plug n play, affordable.
 
I'd 100% suggest a USB headset if you plan on any kind of voice communication while gaming. The voice quality compared to most people using crappy analog mics is very noticable.

Like the poster above me, I also use a Plantronics DSP-500 but it's been discontinued. Excellent headset. This model at amazon looks very similar and it is pretty cheap.

I've got a the Plantronics GAMECOM 1s and they're pretty good. The only complaint I really have is that they're USB so I can only use them on a computer which is a bit inconvenient sometimes. They also don't make any use of my soundcard on my desktop. I think I saw a version that has the normal 1/8 connectors that can optionally plug into an included USB connector but I wasn't able to find it with a quick search.
 
From what I read in the amazon reviews, GameComPro1 is identical to DSP-500 internally. Once difference is the paint job.
 
I know creative isn't the best company in the world, but I thought soundwise everything would be ok since I have a Soundblaster X-Fi card?
