Recommendations for a cable modem?

I am looking for suggestions to which cable modem I should purchase. I had a 3-month tryout deal with my local company, and have decided to keep the service. I'd like to buy my own modem, as it'll be cheaper in the long run than continuing to rent theirs.

The installer suggested 3Com or Motorola Skateboard external modem, but I don't know much about either one. Any help would be appreciated.

It does not matter, get the Cheapst.

Buy.com or Amazon.com have 3com cable modem for good price.

It does matter. I've been researching cable modems, I plan on buying one soon myself. From what I've heard RCA modems really suck and should be avoided, and 3Com's for whatever reason aren't too great either (not positive about that). Everyone seems to agree that the Motorola Surfboard SB4100 and Toshiba's line of modems are the best. Haven't heard too much about the Linksys BEFCMU10, I've gotten the impression that's it's decent.

I think I've decided on the Motorola SB4100. Just make sure what you get is supported by your ISP.

Here's something from DSLReport's Cable Modem FAQ: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/3350

ive had a 3com cmx for over 2 years. Its been turned off for about 20 days in that time, and its still as solid as a rock - but then I should hope so, with a 5 year guarnatee, its the 3com name that replaces stuff no quibbles that I paid for.
