i am looking at purchasing an external dvd burner. Have looked at the BenQ Ew162I and the LG GSA-516OB.

does anyone have experience with these or other models that are good??

Both are 16X+R and 16X-R DVD+- RW/R

Looking for comments,

Thankyou.

Quite honestly, I'd stay away from those brands. Not to say that they're bad, but they're certainly not among the best.

You may want to consider buying a NEC 3520 and putting it into one of these cases.

Agreed. I think that would be a much better option.

What is the problem with these external burners? I am not going to be doing a lot of burning, just occasional.
talked to my techie and he is not interested in putting together an NEC into a case. Just wondered if the answers to my questions were from the US or Canada.

I have spoken to another 2 to techies, as i am not of the ability to put together something like this and they are not interested either, that is why i was wondering if you are from the US??

Also in closing just wanted to get a good idea with what is wrong with these burners?

Thankyou

Most complains about dvd burners are based on performance and/or how compatable they are with various media. I have the NEC mentioned as an internal drive and like it. I can see no particular reason not to put it in an external drive case. You don't need to know much more how to use a screwdriver if you can read instructions to use an external enclosure.
