The older I've got, the more intersted I've become in the universe. I was wondering if anyone had a good recommendation on a book that talks a little about everything but isn't super geek technical.
Hyperspace by Micho Kaku isn't bad, but its more about theoretical intrepretations of quantam physics ie: higher deminsions and faster than light time travel. Not sure if that's what your looking for though.
Cosmos by Carl Sagan is good
a Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking
Cosmic Horizons: Astronomy at the Cutting Edge; an american museum of natural history book.
I havent read the elegant universe, i saw the series which was interesting. the above works are good as introductions and a source of general information.
Best way to get to know more about the universe? Get a telescope (if you don't build them yourself, Celestron and Meade make good commercial quality ones). You'll learn over time all about the wonders of the universe by doing more than reading someone else's opinion (you'll also learn how to navigate the night skies). Astrophotography also really brings it home (you'll learn things like "stacking" to get higher res shots from CCD cameras).
Nothing is more beautiful and awe aspiring than our night sky. It'll humble anyone. It's also a wonderful way for you and your kids (if you have any) to have time together.
