Recommendation of a Phone?

I know this might be a bit early to ask, but I just remembered that my Verizon account is due for a re-up in the summer (around July) and wondering if there are any summer phones or phones to get by summer time? Maybe the Omnia would be cheaper by then? Please, no Blackberry recommendations, I don't want to pay for an extra data plan outside the Verizon minute plans.

This is just on my mind of late because my phone is cracking right now and I can borrow someone's not-being-used Alias until my current plan gets re-uped.

Motorola's new touch-screen flip phone is pretty cool. I was messing around with one in the store this past weekend. Not sure what's going to be released in the next 6 months, though.

Just a heads up.. verizon requires data plans on all new smartphones after last November. Im almost 100% positive that the Omnia falls into that category. Also, Verizon is more than willing to let you get the discount price a few months early as long as you sign up for 2 more years (i just did this)

the krave is a horrible phone to live with. no speed dial and crappy browser... perhaps you can deal with the browser, but no speed dial? even phones from half a decade ago had speed dial.

pda/smartphones require a $30/mo data plan, btw

Sorry for double posting, but do you think I should still try to go for maybe a Samsung i760 or XV6800 since they are smartphones with Wi-Fi? Maybe if I can find one for cheap enough, do you think they would be good options? Also, does Sprint have a required data plan for all new smartphones and PDAs?

And if there are nothing like that, then maybe something with a QWERTY keyboard, even if it isn't a smart phone or Wi-Fi (not necessarily an enV2 or an Alias/u740).

Sorry for the triple post, but since this is the case, then how about something QWERTY? I could just use the Alias that I am going to be given for now or I could get maybe a new VX8360?

If your going Verizon then EVDO coverage and signal strength should reduce or remove the need for wi-fi so I really wouldn't worry about.

Also have you looked at the Blackberry's. You have the Curve with a qwerty keyboard, you have the Pearl for smaller profiles and a suretype type keyboard and the storm thats a touch screen with clickable screen. There email and typing capabilities are unmatched.

Also I would look at the Current WinMo HTC they carry (though I believe the VX6800 is also a rebranded HTC). The Omnia is getting lots of raves as well.

I guess the question is what do you want a smart phone for. Because each one has its strengths in different areas.

No thought to the i770 (saga)? It's an awesome phone, and I got one for $80 after MIR about a month ago.

I have had with Verizon

BB World
BB Curve
BB Storm
Samsung i770
LG Dare

I still have the Storm and Curve (for work). The Storm should have sufficient updates available by this summer to make it more friendly. I already updated the firmware to .99 and see a vast improvement.

I would get the BB Curve 8900 probably. Simple, reliable, new interface will make it not seem as outdated.

To be honest, I think I might have come up with something. My brother might not be on our plan when it gets re-uped in the summer. So I was thinking. How bout a LG Voyager plus a $15 unlimited data plan and $10 for texting? (I'm already paying $10 a month for texting and with my brother not on the plan, the $15 could be doable).

General consensus that if you're after web browsing that the browser is pretty much unusable just so you know.

Well the point of the data plan is so I don't have to pay a crap load for the random kilobytes and megabytes that show up on the bill, and it's like 2.99 a meg isn't it? Or do you think I should just get the text message plan only?

I just got a Curve and I'm really enjoying it.(had the org. Env since launch) That said, its just a hold-me-over until Verizon releases their version of the Curve 8900.

I also liked the Voyager but I just didn't want another clam-shell phone, if only it had been a slider.

Is there a time frame on when the curve 8900 is goign to be released? I have an 8830 right now and I kind of wanted to get a curve, but if the 8900 will be out then I can wait.

I am curious, from what you have seen, would you suggest maybe the new VX9800 (I think that is the name)? The little brother of the Dare. The one that can have the QWERTY keyboard and other mods, supposedly.

Ok, this is annoying the hell out of me. Can someone recommend a phone that supports either or all of these features:

Wi-Fi
QWERTY Keyboard
Touch Screen

Anything, even if it isn't Verizon.

I know I sound like a broken record :p, but the Samsung Saga has all of those (and a great UI, imo) and is available for under $100... Just that it requires the $30/mo data plan...

I have the Omnia, if you are willing to mod it a little bit with downloads from various sources. It has a few quirks, which may be due to my 3rd party software, but it definitely does everything I need my phone to do (browse internet anywhere, sync with outlook for contacts/calendar, check e-mail automatically, threaded sms).

I'm just double checking because I'm too lazy to check myself, but the $30/month for the data plan doesn't include txt messaging right? Also, maybe a Dare? Mainly because it is not considered a smart phone and if you gave it a plan, it would be $15 a month instead of $30 (so $15 plus $10 for messaging = $25, which is $5 less than $30).

So considering the prices of the Omnia and the Dare with their plans ($30 and 15$ respectively), do you think I should go for the Dare over the Omnia when it comes to getting a data plan and messaging? Or maybe a third option of a Voyager? And to say right now, the new brother of the Dare, is going to be $200, which is crap in my opinion, but of well.

If you think about it, the Omnia is now $99 with Verizon. So since the Versa is coming out on March 1st for $200, do you think that by the time July and August it could be $99 like the Omnia is now?

Verizon has a Samsung promotion going on right now, where (I think) the Omnia is 50% off. I wouldn't necessarily rely on this happening for other phones in the same time frame.
