I went into Meijer's yesterday afternoon to look at the 150N and there on the shelves were three Buffalo routers. Two G54's and one G125. I couldn't remember which to buy and picked up the G125. I'm going back this afternoon and I think I may just pick up the remaining two.

And they're 10% off this week!

Lucky. How much was the G125 and G54s if you don't mind me asking?

It is a simple choice, you can get q WRT54GL and have No PITA, or save few $$ and feel a little PITA.

They're $49.99 before the 10% off. Both models same price. I went and looked at them this afternoon and talked myself out of it. Why, I'm not sure. I've got a thread going on the G125. Looks like it's NFG. I'm trying to decide if I want to now go back again tomorrow and get a G54S, or go back to my tried and true Netgear. I don't even need wireless, just thought I'd get it for the occasional notebook I work on.

Yeah, just saw the post and left a reply. Bummer about it being flaky like that. 🙁 Maybe dd-wrt can help out.

Man, buffalo's aren't available in the US anymore? What a shame, the entire product line was quickly becoming the DD-WRT hardware of choice.
I've already got a 802.11g hp router, as well as two of the g125 routers from a while back (summer for the g125s, last year for the hp) and they're pretty nice. Was thinking about upgrading to the dd-wrt capable wireless n router buffalo had (perhaps more than 1 now?) but I guess that's moot now, meh. Well, buffalo routers can still be found on ebay for somewhat decent prices if you try hard enough it seems.

Anyone know what the lawsuit is about?

IIRC, some Chinese company was claiming patent infringement. Their claim was upheld and Buffalo was prohibited from selling their products in the US until it was resolved.

However, I just went to the Buffalo site and when you clicked on Wireless you used to get a brief synopsis of the situation. Buffalo Tech stated that they were confident they would be held harmless etc., etc. You no longer see that and get moved on to their wireless products.

Maybe this has been settled.

Edit: Jack beat me to it.

I didn't say there was a problem. Just stating that the Airlink is a PITA to to install DD-WRT on.

Figures, I just snagged a WHR-G125 for $56 shipped and the injunction may be done with. Ah well, if it over and these show up in retail again I'm definitely gonna grab another G125.

I just ordered one of these up: http://www.mwave.com/mwave/vie...a=BA24252&RSKU=BA24252

Contains the Broadcom 5354 chip @ 240 MHz with 16 MB ram and 4 MB flash (will hold a standard DD-WRT firmware)

Also contains a USB port (print server, etc..)

Nearly similiar specs to the WHR-G125.

Pretty good deal I'd say........

Oh my, oh my. What a very tasty looking router. That USB port looks oh so beneficial. Well, I think Buffalo has been dethroned as the DD-WRT router of choice. 😀

I have been using this router for about 3 days now with DD-WRT and it is rock solid. However, usb is not supported with DD-WRT (didn't know that until after I ordered it, however, there is some complicated linux code that may enable it). Nonetheless, the router is on par with my WHR-G125, absolutely stable. I am very pleased with it and really don't miss the print server although that would have been a nice feature.

I did have some issues with flashing the Asus WL-520GU but figured it out, and it is working perfectly. See here for details.: http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=26194

Yeah I've been reading up on adding USB support. Seems fairly straight foward. Hopefully it works as it would be really nice to get rid of my d-link print server and have the router take care of that. Even I don't get it working with a defult build of dd-wrt there are a couple special builds that have it enabled so I can try those. If that doesn't work, it will be nice to have a dd-wrt router anyway. 🙂

The WL-520GU is very easy to flash to DD-WRT but keep in mind that it contains the newer Broadcom 5354 chip which requires a special version of DD-WRT. The 5354 is also the chip inside the Buffalo WHR-G125. I own a WHR-G125 and it works great with DD-WRT.

You won't find it in the Wiki, but, because the Asus and Buffalo routers contain similar chips, I chose to flash my Asus with dd-wrt.v24_std_whr-g125.bin from the release candidate (RC5) directory for the Buffalo WHR-G125. I've performed the flash a few times and DD-WRT worked perfectly every time.

http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2...t.v24_std_whr-g125.bin

EDIT: I have just flashed the Eko build RC6-8790 for the 535x chip (nokaid) and it is also working fine: http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2...6-8790_535x_nokaid.bin

Here are the steps to a successful flash:

2 additional files need to be downloaded to perform the procedure. (Right click on the links and use "save link as"):

http://wl500g.dyndns.org/wl500g-clear-nvram.trx
http://wl500g.dyndns.org/wl500g-recover.trx

1. Set PC IP manually to 192.168.1.10 (192.168.1.1 gateway)
2. Unplug power cord from wl-500gu.
3. Press and hold restore button and then insert power cord back into router. When the PWR light starts flashing, release Restore button. Now your wl-500gu is in restore mode.
4. Run Asus Firmware Restoration (can be found on asus website or included cd)
5. Choose the wl500g-clear-nvram.trx file and upload it to the router.
6. After the upload successful message, repeat steps 2 and 3. (the router will not reboot on it's own)
7. Choose the wl500g-recover.trx file and also upload it to your router.
8. After the upload successful message, repeat steps 2 and 3. (the router will not reboot on it's own)
9. Choose the dd-wrt.v24_std_whr-g125.bin file and upload to router. (or the Eko build mentioned above)
10. The router is ready - enter 192.168.1.1 (root/admin)
11. Reset PC IP to obtain automatically.

Enjoy DD-WRT

USB print server function is lost as DD-WRT does not support USB.

Reverting back to the ASUS firmware is very easy too. Just use the above procedure and at step 9, flash in the newest ASUS firmware 2.0.0.6. It's that easy.

Oh I know, I have everything ready and waiting for the 520gu. Just have to wait unitl mwave delivers it. I've been playing with my DD-WRT fonera for a while and the only reason I even bought this Asus was because of the experience with the fon.
