Recommendation for DD-WRT compatible router?

I've currently got two Linksys WRT54G routers (a v8 and a v2.2) running on my network. The v8 serves as my router and DHCP server and connects to my cable modem, while the v2.2 acts a client bridge running the DD-WRT firmware.

I'm getting a TiVo HD unit soon, and I'd like to add a second client bridge to my home theater setup. DD-WRT seems to be working well for me on my 2.2 router, so it seems like a logical choice for this application.

I'd like to keep the price at or below $50 if I can. Buffalo had some good options before they halted U.S. sales. Any other recommendations for a solid DD-WRT compatible router?

Get Buffallo... probably the best device for DD-WRT... WHR-HP-G54

I've probably flashed at least a dozen of these boxes. Never a problem... very easy and performance is good :)

Go get it boy!

They are impossible to find now. Every store I have checked is out-of-stock, and they are going for $90+ on eBay.

There is a lawsuit preventing any new buffalo routers from being imported. A few weeks ago I found one for $20 on clearance at best buy, it helped pay for Christmas this year.

Linksys WRT54GL. There are also some ASUS models that are compatible with DD-WRT. Go to the DD-WRT site and search around the forums and wiki. There should be a list of which is supported and which isn't.

Are you trying to tell me that this router (WHR-G125) I have been knocking over every night as I get into bed and not plugged into anything since I bought it for $25 after rebate is worth $90 on ebay?

If you're going to check eBay, there are tons of old (and new) Linksys WRT54G's to be found there. Of course you should stick with versions 4 or older or the GL if you can.

You could also try a simpler client mode bridge. E.g. the Netgear WGPS606 (or better, the Buffalo if you can find it).

Jack also dug up an inexpensive ZyXEL (P-330W) which has client mode wireless in its documented feature set (although this hasn't been tried yet by a poster here AFAIK).

is that the airlink ar430w? i bought it at frys for $20, and it is being rather difficult. i have it set it client bridge mode, and it "works." you can't flash via web interface initially, my pc takes about five minutes after plugging in to be able to use the internet, and it takes even longer for my 360 to connect to xbox live. once it is connected, however, it is stable.

if you want to tinker (and maybe drive yourself crazy), you can't go wrong for $20. but others have reported bridging problems also.

Yes, it is. And I'll gladly pay you $25 plus shipping for it. I'll give it a good home, all nice and hacked with DD-WRT. :D

LOL, well for the record, I bought it just so I could hack it with DD-WRT. ;) Although I may upgrade my current router to it as well sometime since my 3Com router is getting long in the tooth and outdated.

Yes I understand what you're saying. I would not go with any other crappy soho router os other than DD-WRT.... I am able to easily run traffic monitoring, bandwidth graphing, separate my home network to a couple vlan, perform QOS, and also block torrent TCP traffic going to my roomate's computer when I need all the bandwidth to myself (he3x).

I'm looking to upgrade my SMC B-router and it looks like the WRT54GL might be the answer. I keep having trouble with connecting to my laptop and was thinking that get a G-router with help me with that problem. Would the Linksys WRT54GL be a wise purchase?

The WRT54GL is a good choice for DD-WRT. It's Linksys's DD-WRT "specific" model. It doesn't have a crippled amount of flash memory like some models of the WRT54G does. You have to do the initial flash with the mini build, but after that you can flash to the full version. :)

Me and bro were able to find a V4 GL in September 2006 when we first stepped to broadband. Thank God because when we chose to do DD-WRT it was flawless. Not to mention it has the most power of all the Consumer Linksys routers. All the other versions are either less memory or less CPU power.

My version 4 could take the full version directly. After preparing things, it was just a matter of putting the full firmware in the upgrade area, and letting it do its thing.

The DD-WRT wiki is your friend. Me and my bro had never done it before previously, and we were freaking out afraid of bricking the router. If you read the instructions there's no way to mess it up. Just see if you need ot flash with a specific version first.

So, the Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 is the BEST wireless G router out there that takes DD-WRT?

Any specific version etc that don't work or something?

I bought a Linksys WRT-150N version 1.0 earlier tonight, and immediately upgraded to the ddwrt firmware without any problems. It was old stock from my local Meijer store. (Meijer is a midwest grocery + retail superstore chain. They don't promote their computer peripherals like Wal-Mart does, so they tend to keep older revisions on their shelves longer.) It cost $20 more than the gimped version 1.1 you can get from New Egg.

I paid extra to get it retail since version 1.1 doesn't work with third party firmware; look on the box for serial numbers starting with CQ60, NOT CQ61. I thought it was a solid deal; if you live in Indiana / Michigan / Ohio / Illinois you might want to check your local store.

FYI I followed the steps "slaughter" outlined on:

http://dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewt...0d5b5e7a9fb5c11ce450a1

Use the generic distro instead of the WRT-300N one. From what I've heard OpenWRT doesn't differentiate between them, but I've read of people bricking 150s with the ddwrt 300n specific version.

swankypimp I owe you a beer.

I went into Meijer's yesterday afternoon to look at the 150N and there on the shelves were three Buffalo routers. Two G54's and one G125. I couldn't remember which to buy and picked up the G125. I'm going back this afternoon and I think I may just pick up the remaining two.

And they're 10% off this week!

I have to agree. I got it for $20 at Fry's too when I heard it was DD-WRT compatible. I didn't find out till later that putting DD-WRT is a true PITA. Especially when compared to the WRT54G and some other routers.
