Audacity also supports high-speed recording of vinyl. Standard 33.33 RPM vinyl recordings can be played at 45 RPM with maximum pitch control and then returned to their normal playback speed once transferred to the computer. And with the ability to export the music to popular formats such as WAV or MP3, those old, once forgotten recordings can again be among the most frequently listened to tunes with today?s portable music players.

Ouch. That's definitely a no-no. Of course an entry level unit is going to have other issues so a pitch shift on the material probably would go un noticed.

What's your budget?

You might want to invest in something to clean your vinyls with as well...

Btw, I wouldn't really go any lower than the entry level turntables that you'll find around $300 or so.

You can choose from the Pro-Ject Debut III, Music Hall MMF 2.1, Rega P1, etc. Look around on musicdirect.com and give them a call, they'll connect you to a turntable technician who knows what he's talking about.

Last time I asked for a turntable tech I was connected to a railroad yard.

The one you linked to looks to be more like a DJ turntable, they use different types of tips on their cartridges to allow the constant turning back and forth, which isn't a benefit for what you're doing.

Whatever you end up getting, let it break in a little before you start recording with it.

Hehe, if you have an unbelievable amount of money to blow and you don't want to wear out your vinyl there's this

Edit: BTW, my dad has always had luck finding turntables in Pawn Shops and Fleamarkets. You do need to be able to do minor repairs if you go that route though. Keep in mind the man likes his vinyl (8000+ albums, they have their own room in his house).

That's a bit cheaper than in the past actually, I remember seeing them for 30-40k if I remember correctly.

The ELP has its share of problems.

Find someone that offers the service that has one and spin a few records on it. It's no reference turntable that's for sure. Of course the price they want for it is sugar compared to a true reference piece. :Q
