Arlington Nat'l Cemetary, Ford's Theatre

Parking is hard to find if you are driving. I went there on an 8th grad field trip, dropped off by charter bus at the entrances of all the places, saw tons of stuff. We also visited Gettysburg.

Bring a coat.

One of my coworkers just got back from DC, she said it was warmer. We're in Boston and it's not bad now, so it shouldn't be worse there.

I'm going to be in DC for a couple days (jan8-9)..

Can anyone recommend a cheapp hotel??? or what city is the best place to stay at??
also i have limited time to go sightseeing, what's the must see & to do things???

Check out the Wyndham City Center Hotel, it's in downtown and near the Metro. The rate average was $75 a night. Their low was $66 and their high was $84, depending on which day of the week.

For the love of jebus, take the metro. Don't try and drive yourself around the city. Trust me.

As far as hotels go, what I've always recommended is staying outside the city and taking the metro in. Find a decent hotel within distance of a metro station. When me and my family went down we would always stay in New Carrollton, MD and take the orange line into the city. There is a Courtyard by Marriott within 2 minutes of a station there. I have no idea what this hotel may cost now, but I guarantee it's a nice place.

I stayed at some HoJo (Howard Johnson) right by the river and across the street from the Watergate. Not sure if its still there or what, but it was cvertainly nice, affordable and easily within walking distance of a pile of crap.
Then again I went in the summer. Winter is a dif sotry.

The Crystal City Mariotts (2 of them) are really convinient too. They're connected by an underground shopping complex to the metro station as well :)

You don't know what you're talking about. Chinatown in DC is probably the worst Chinatown in America. Anyway, if you're looking for good food look downtown, though it'll cost ya.

Random thoughts from my 2-day trip last month:

Do yourself and everyone in the city a favor by leaving the car at the hotel and take the metro/walk everywhere. The reflecting pool is drained for construction so leave your swim trunks at home. $2.50 Polish sausage at a street vendor is one of the worst investments you can make. Do NOT have a pocket knife or anything of that sorts on you; everywhere you go has metal detectors to get in and you'll have to cough it up if you have one with you. Union Station has generally good food (particularly the Chineses), but it's a bit costly. Smithsonian Aerospace Museum is pretty cool.

Went there just this last summer...how old are you? See the usual sights (there are tons) during the day, and the bar scene and club scene is awesome at night...

wow, that was sooooooo not helpful. My friend took us everywhere, if you didn't notice ;)

If you are looking for thrills try this itinerary

7:00 a.m. hop on the beltway (i495) go around once in each direction, then it is time to go for a late afternoon stroll, like you said it is hot and humid so dress appropriately, bike shorts and a sleeveless rainbow T-shirt, then take a cab to Dupont circle and just wander, after a while you might feel the need for some female company and there are lots of available ladies in D.C. borrow a car (dont take your own) and head towards 14th and K street and strike up a conversation with a gal, they are relatively tame and will come right up to your car, but just like at the wildlife safari keep your doors locked and only crack the window a little bit, if you survive that it should be just about dark, head for south east D.C. and cruise around, dont worry if you get lost the locals will tell you where to go, when you flee that area, head up Wisconsin Ave. to a bar called GoodGuys and have a few beers, after all thats happened today your visit to GoodGuys will be the only thing you will want to remember ;)

I am visiting the DC area waiting to get a car since i wrecked mine here last week. If you want someone to go to the smithsonian and the air and space museum in the next 5-6 days pm me and ill meet you at a metro stop somewhere...... I was going to go this week by myself (well my ipod is a person too).

I was impressed by the National Cathedral. It's been years since I've been to DC, but would love to go again. The Air & Space museum was excellent as was the Hoover building. I also got to see a lot of military sites as my Aunt & Uncle were both in the service. Andrews AFB was exceptionally cool as was the Pentagon.

Jefferson Memorial and Natural History Museum are the best monument and museum IMO.

Be sure to check out the clock tower of the Old Post Office. It's free, and is one of the best views in D.C.

Georgetown has lots of nice shops and houses and it's fun to watch the snobs.

Capitol Hill has some really cool rowhouses. Be sure to check out the market at Eastern Market on Saturday.

Old Town Alexandria is very nice, like Georgetown but much more laid-back.

Good, reasonably priced food is everywhere. Check washingtonpost.com for reviews of places. If you are near the Mall and want something decent and cheap, hit up Union Station and the Ronald Reagan building food court.

Black Cat and 9:30 Club are cool for concerts. The Kennedy Center Millenium Stage has a different free concert every day. If you're out to drink, hit Adams Morgan or Georgetown.

Dupont Circle is cool to hang out in if you don't mind seeing people with "alternative lifestyles".

The Sculpture Garden on the Mall has an ice skating rink in the fountain during the winter.

Gravely Point is a great place to park and watch the planes. They take off and land right over you. Actually, this is proably the coolest place in D.C.

Annapolis and Batlimore's Inner Harbor are nice day trips.

Take Metro everywhere - get yourself and unlimited use pass. And don't worry about getting shot - handguns are illegal in D.C. ;) ;) ;)
