We got a couple complete pampered chef sets as engagement/wedding gifts. I know nothing about pots and pans, but they look nice.

No lurv for Lagostina?

I'm of the opine that pots 'n' pans are essential tools and therefore should be durable 'nuff that replacement is infrequent to never. So, better to get a good set once. Even if it costs more than you'd like at first, chances are it shan't be regretted long term.

In a way it is easier to say what not to get:

-plastic handles preclude oven use and will break

-so-called non-stick coating will wear out and in the meantime you have to baby 'em

-thin bottoms will warp

-glass lids will break (but they do have a functional benefit so it's definitely a trade-off).

I'm sure there are other factors but I donut pretend to be knowledgable on the subject.

I have a set of this as well. It's great cookware. I think it's about $20 cheaper in store than online IIRC.

Pampered Chef is a newer player in the cookware field but their stuff is really great quality. We actually replaced all out All Clad stuff with PC stuff because it's higher quality and has a lifetime warranty. I just PM'd the OP a link but you can view it all here:

Why buy sets of cheap pans every few years when you can buy one great set that will last forever....

Best of all, host a Catalog Party by taking a catalog to work and getting orders and you can get it for really cheap.

i have used the Cook's Essentials stuff from QVC. we have a set here in our house and my parents have a set that is about 8 years old. they both have held up very well, i do not belive there is even one scratch in my parents stuff. the non-stick still works great also. the ones we have also have very nice lids w/ strainers and the pots have pour spouts that make it really easy to decant stuff.

Kirkland stuff is almost always great, but with any kind of anodized aluminum, you have to be careful with acidic foods - I recall one person's hard anodized stock pot had its oxide layer dissolved by apple sauce.

If you want top quality go with Pampered Chef.

They may cost 10 times as much as the "cheap" stuff at walmart or target, but they will last 10 times as long, if not, then no problem, as they come with a lifetime warranty.

I bought our non-stick frying pans from Gordon Food Service.

I forget what our other pots are... it's a hodgepodge from misc outlet kitchen stores.

All I can recommend is that you get pans that have a copper center and are non-stick. They may be a little more expensive, but are really nice to cook with :)

No brands come to mind.

I guess, lol.

I mean, non-stick is good, right?

Non-stick vs non-non-stick has sparked more wars than religion (at least around here). It comes down to personal preference. Some folks like stainless and cast iron and others are wrong. ;)

It's pretty much impossible to build a good pan sauce in non-stick cookware.

We have a couple of the higher end Calphalon One Infused Anodized cookware pieces, and they are wonderful to cook with. Worth every penny.

Costco has an awesome stainless steel set that I have and love. Around 180-200 I think? + costco guarantee = awesome

of course, as mentioned above, we also have 1 nonstick pan that we use for eggs.

I have a set of Cuisinart stainless I like, a cast iron skillet, and one generic non-stick fry pan.
