No problem, I was merely pointint out the characteristics of those speakers you recommended in comparison to what else was. I was agreeing with you but also trying to point out that it doesn't mean either of us is really right so to speak as each person should determine what sound they like. I do like neutral equipment and we would be better off if there was more, but sadly we don't.

I felt bad because I think you thought I was just trashing your opinion when I was trying to offer a contradictory point that I felt valid.

Part of the reason I've become a headphone convert is because of how much better quality you can get from them in the lower price ranges.

That is the same reason I got into DIY. ;)

It's ok to disagree and at times it can be helpful. I merely mistook the part where you quoted me and thought it was a snippet of a larger quote.

The z-5500s use a 10" driver and I don't think any passive radiators are involved in that sub.

I think the thread you're talking about was a x-530 (or something similar) one where there is a 6"? passive radiator and a 4"? driver inside the sub.

You shutup. :D

I will someday (why not today, cause I'm too lazy to right now).

Its not the only reason, as headphones offer nice isolation. Plus I live in an apartment (and will for the forseeable future) so I can't properly test the equipment like I would like to.

Of course I will also combine the two and get into DIY headphone stuff as well (amps, recabling, etc).

You should, it is totally worth it.

And I completely agree about isolation. Even though I am speaker and sub crazy, I still cherish my good/decent pair of headphones (AudioTechnica A500) for the times I need isolation.

And if I lived in an apartment like you, you better believe I'd spend more on my headphone setup than and less on my speaker/sub setup than I do now.

Or just live in a very noise-tolerant apartment building ;)

How you liking them? I'm sure they're no match for your speakers (especially the dual SVS subs).

I like them a lot. My pre-pro does a much nicer job driving them than my little go-vibe 5 + mp3 player.

I finally got my replacement headphone extension cable back from cablesforless a few days ago. They had it wired up to switch Left and Right. Took me a little while to catch that one heh.

Most of the lower stuff my subs do mainly just pressurize the room and get various things vibrating so I don't miss that too much wearing headphones. I really like how they sound, much easier to get something great sounding on a budget with headphones than speakers

Z-2300 is from their higher end line; a friend of mine bought them on my recommendation and I thought they were pretty damn good. Amazon has them for $114.99 right now and they've got a 5% discount for certain PC accessories, plus these speakers have free shipping. Comes out to ~$109 shipped.

I have nothing against logitech. They got me started :p, but given the choice between Promedia 2.1 vs. z-2300, I'd take the Klipsch set myself especially if music is a primary concern vs. gaming.

Wait, here's a better one

Yeah, its great that you can make use of the nice equipment for your headphones too.

Have you listened to both at the same time? I know some people really enjoy it and swear its the best.

Subs + headphones you mean? :p

If so, I'd better wait until the sun comes up ;)
I could try headphones + bass shakers though

EDIT: ok, that was kind of strange :p
Well I'd better get off to bed in case the new gf comes back from trip to Vegas early.

I might try the subs with headphones tomorrow but I'll probably end up using my soundcard to drive the headphones instead of the pre-pro since I don't know a way to get the headphone output to enable and still send a signal out to the subs.

I was meaning the full speaker setup and headphones. I think there's a bit of calibration that you'd need to do to get them to sync (there'll be a minor delay between hearing out of the headphones versus when the sound from the speakers gets to you). Might be fun to play around with. It should work for you since you have open headphones so you get a fair amount of outside noise.

Maybe something to play around with (imagine if there was audio mixed to take advantage of a setup like this, where you could get an echo effect and stuff).

KLIPSCH PROMEDIA 2.1

It may be a little bit more than $100 but you seriously don't want anything else in the price range.

The only time I remember doing this on purpose was a few years ago in the dorms one night thinking that my receiver was off and playing some Linkin Park at about 2am. Luckily my ex was there to tell me the speakers were on too or I wouldn't have noticed for a while since I was using my HD280s ;)

I've owned both the klipch and the logitech z-2300 and i would strongly recommend the z-2300 over them.

The z-2300 seem to have a clearer bass and overall the sound is a bit cleaner.

However, i think the z-2300s will be a bit over 100 if you can't find a good sale.

I think its because people tend to not change audio equipment as much as other things (especially when talking about computers). For them it is an investment to spend $200 on a pretty good set of speakers instead of buying $50 ones then $100 ones, then $150 ones and so on. It does save them money in the long run and they get more enjoyment out of them. Its kinda like when a company invests in new equipment. Yeah it will go down in value but the utility they get out of it exceeds the loss from depreciation.

Also in some cases you really can call it an investment. Speakers from the 70s are still good (might need some minor repair if taken care of just decently well), but now you can sell them for a lot of money as vintage equipment. There really has not been that much advancement in overall speaker technology through the years so a good speaker is a good speaker and it won't lose much value over time if its good, and if its popular but scarce enough then it will likely go up in value.

I still hear people refer to their purchase of cars, computers, tvs, etc as "INVESTMENTS" as which they are not and like the swan speakers, most will end up in the dump or at Goodwill for a nickel. Geeze, those number two pencils sure were the best investment I ever made on a writing instrument.

Again, there is utility gained. You cannot discount that. If I get more use out of a product than it costs me then it is an investment compared to paying more money for something I don't get as much use out of. A car can definitely be an investment as maybe you can make more money by being able to travel further (or save money by buying a much more efficient vehicle to commute). If it helps you to save money overall then you can view it as an investment.

A TV yeah typically isn't, but it can be. I spent $500 on a TV a couple of years ago that gives me good quality (unbeatable at that price point even today). I got an HDTV so I'll be covered there. By buying it then before the CRTs mostly disappear I get better quality for less money. My utility exceeds my cost as had I not bought it I would end up paying more later for possibly worse quality, plus I get the full benefit of that quality for the entire time between.

I personally think the Swans will hold their value more than the M-Audio speakers you linked earlier. Most people won't know the difference, but they'll likely find more info on the Swans being a rare but popular speaker. Also the wood (in audio equipment wood is a big selling point) and overall appearance will help it maintain its value more.

Don't get me wrong, I get your point and most people do not understand investment (like people spending a lot of money on a 1080p TV when all they watch is SD TV and will buy another new TV in just a few years).
