Hello, currently I have a set of pretty cheap sony speakers in my Home Theater. I am looking into the low-mid range speakers. I don't want to spend more than 250 dollars on a set of 6.1 speakers. What are some good brands right now? I have a small living room, so I don't want tower speakers. Any ideas?

EDIT: please read the post below to see my setup. Thanks

Man...I wish I could help you, but I'm so used to dealing with more money, that I just realized I don't even have one suggestion outside of computer speakers! I'm sure you can find something...perhaps used?

sorry if that sounded mocking or condescending...it wasn't intended to do so.

$250 for a 6.1 set is, well, absurdly low. So your budget is $35 a speaker? What sort of quality do you expect to get for that price?

Consider doing it in stages. You could get a really decent pair of speakers for $250, or possibly a L / C / R for $250 or maybe even stretch it to two matched pairs for that much. But trying to buy *7* home theater speakers for that kind of money is a real stretch... and you don't NEED 7 speakers under any stretch of the imagination - two will do quite nicely, 5 will do just fine.

if you can deal with 5.1, you can get your hands on a nice polk package. For 6.1...I dont even know where to point you. All the manufacturers are putting high price points on the 6.1 setups because everyone is whoring out 5.1's.

It sounds like you only have a stereo or prologic set up right now. Go 5.1 first, then upgrade later on.

Sorry everyone! I was really indescript in my original post. I'm looking for HT speakers.
Heres my setup...
H/K AVR 230
26" Samsung Widescreen HDTV(just shows how small the room is)
Samsung SIR-TS160 HDTV receiver
Panasonic VCR
Sony 5 disc DVD player
5.1 Sony basic speakers

Right now I think my speakers are holding back my receiver and I'm trying to find some good speakers. However considering I just put about 1500 in my HT in the past year, I don't really want to spend that much on speakers. I'll look into polk setups (but it sounds like thats a little to far out of my price range). Thanks

gimme a few minutes and I will find you a link.

BTW, with a room that small, your rear surrounds and read center would probably blend together.

EDIT: fleebay, but this is what I was talking about

Thanks GoodDad. What about Wharfedale speakers? Are they any good? This Guy got a center, rear, front speakers for about 300 bucks from reputable retailers.

new to me. But kevlar cones and silk dome tweets make for good speakers.

I'm seriously considering that Polk audio package that GoodDad posted. It's about 400 off the retail Brand New under warranty and from a Power Seller! Only thing I am hesitant about is trying to find an extra sattelite for 6.1. It says on the Polk website sattelites aren't sold individually. BTW if I were to buy this system could someone reccomend good speaker wire to go with it? I don't understand the guage system and so I don't know what to buy. BTW these are my current speakers w/o the sub

14 guage speaker wire will work fine. The smaller the number, the bigger the wire. If you want to upgrade later on, just buy a new center and rotate the old one to the rear.

Great sound, great housing, great mounting bracket/stand, great price... and when you upgrade, you'll have suitable speakers for outdoor use. BEAT THAT!

Worse, equal or better than the Polk listed before? If I do get the polk, I want 6.1 ASAP, what would be a good center channel to put that's on par with the polks? So basically I'm looking at around...
230 for Polk speakers
30 for Monster 100 feet (is there a big difference between 16 gauge and 14?)
+ Center channel
I'd like to keep it under 300 now I guess...
Hopefully I can get ~75 for my old speakers w/sub

never would have thought of Edge's for surround...but they would work just fine.

Those speakers sound as good if not better than Polk and Bose's indoor/outdoors. Make sure to get a good sub if you do go with those though.

Do NOT skimp on the center, it is arguably the most important speaker for movies and TV.

Save up some more money

Since the JBL S line can no longer be found, take a look at the Infinity Alpha series

Don't waste your time, you'll probably want to upgrade again after.

Wait until you have more expendable cash.

Hello everyone again...So now everyone seems to be leaning towards the AR Edge. I have a few things to say about them. 1. Will they look kind of tacky being outdoor/indoor speakers? I've always found the grill mesh fronts of speakers to look cheap. Also these speakers seem to be 3-4 years old, will that be a problem?

I also feel like everyone thinks I am going to trash the speakers I am about to buy soon. I am not much of an audiophile and I really don't see myself spending a lot on speakers. I paid 400 for my receiver and spending more on speakers than the receiver just sounds crazy. Also I might be afraid all these high end speakers might blow out my receiver. I'm not even sure I want to buy speakers anymore.

Also I would like to know, how much more money are we talking about saving up for new speakers? I have a feeling if I save up for these speakers people will tell me I'll need a new receiver and/or a pre-amp. I live in a small house and in the city. I cannot play my music loudly without the neighbors getting angry. Am I asking the wrong people?

You have it all mixed up duder, the HK AVR 230 craves good speakers.

Also I might be afraid all these high end speakers might blow out my receiver
Again wrong way around, you crank the AVR 230 and it will easly wreck little $35 speakers

You do know the AVR 230 is rated at about 40 or 50 watts per channel right? I was browsing fatwallet and found this. It's probably dead by now but I'm going to check BB. Are these good speakers and a good price?
