How bout the rarely played though VERY fun simotaniouse (Sp?) turn-based strategy game Age of Wonders. Seriously, this game is a lot of fun.
Another barely played though really cool game called Majesty. Awesome little game, no micro-management.
Both of the above have been out long enough you can probably find them in the bargin bin. And both games got NO PRESS or reviews and are thus highly under-rated. I have been playing them a hole butt load lately.
UT and Q3A are fun (though UT is better 😛 )
Deus EX
Soldier of Fortune was pretty cool.
AoE2 and the expansion pack
Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 (not my cup of tea, but still fun), pass on IceWind Dale it was horribly linear for a the D&D name.
That half-life addon Opposing Forces or what ever it was called.
Homeworld was ABSOLUTELY GREAT, though HomeWorld:Cataclysm was only OK.
Grim Fandango, the best Adventure Game to come out in a long time.
Thief 1 and 2 were GREAT!
scale of 1-10 (10 best 1 worst) all imho
UT 8
Q3A 6
Deus EX 8.5
Soldier of Fortune 7
AOE2 6 (haven't played the expansion pak, heard it was awesome)
BG1 6
BG2 7.5
IWD 5
half-life addon 7
Homeworld 8.75
Homeworld:Cataclysm 6.5 (don't need original Homeworld installed to play, it is a stand alone product)
Grim Fandango 10 (flat out in the top 3 games I have ever played)
Thief 1 7
Theif 2 8.5
Age of wonders 8
Majesty 7
I say UT/Q3A, Deus Ex, BG2 (if you like RPG's), Homeworld, Grim Fandango, and Thief 2 are all picks you will like/love. Age of Wonders you WILL like if you like RTS games but feel they are lacking in certain areas. Majesty you will like if you are sick of tedious micro management in RTS games. Hope that helps.
Oh ya, if you are looking for a laugh fest at a LAN party pick up Die by the Sword. It's a little buggy, but once you get it to work you all will laugh for hours playing that game, hacking off arms and what not. This can DEFINATLEY be found in *any* bargin bin.
