Seems like every Faith No More song is a different style, but all somewhat "hard rock" and an acquired taste. Let me know if you want a sample (try before you buy, no law breakin') :).

The Watchmen, all 5 albums.
Anything in particular? I'm not going to go listen to 60 songs to see if I like them.
Stereo from Silent Radar
Incarnate from Brand New Day
Wiser from In the Trees
Make You Go Down from McLarenFurnaceRoom
Together from Slomotion

That'll give you a good overview of their sound. Unlike a lot of ultra popular bands, they tend to have a range of sound. Hee, when I introduced them to a friend of mine he told me that within 30 seconds of Stereo he had his roommates in his room going "What is this? What have you been hiding from us?"

Ehh, maybe some Nine Inch Nails? You can't beat And All That Could Have Been.

If not NIN, then maybe A Perfect Circle, both of their albums are very ____ (good). I just can't think of a single word to describe them.

Alice in Chains - Jar of Flies: mostly acoustic, in my opinion AIC's best
Pearl Jam - Ten: classic album, but if you aren't familiar check it out
Soundgarden - Badmotofinger: in my opinion their best album
Primus - Sailing the Seas of Cheese: I don't know which Primus album I like best, but check them out if you haven't already

Clinic--Wallking With Thee. Sort of like Radiohead, but not so damn paranoid.

Elliott Smith--Anything, although his self-titled is my favorite. More of a singer/songwriter type and may be a little light for you.

Flaming Lips--Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. Again, perhaps a little light, but it's incredibly trippy music (for some reason, I find it most amazing out in large crowds).

Oranger--The Quiet Vibration Land. A little bit harder to find (though their website has a few songs to download and you can buy it from there). Sorta has a 60s feel.

Ladytron--Light and Magic. 80s synth-pop kinda music.

Queens of the Stone Age--Songs for the Deaf. Excellent rock music. 'Nuff said.

Sleater-Kinney--Dig Me Out. Female group. Both powerful tunes and lyrics.
