Hey Everyone,

I just finished my build and committed the ultimate no no. I bought a crappy power supply only because it was FREE after rebate. Well, you get what you pay for.

Can anyone recommend a quiet, high quality power supply? Key word: QUIET.

Thanks

Seasonic are among the quietest short of a fanless PSU. Enhance PSUs aren't bad either and the 5140 or 5150GH are nice bargains.

Wow, yeah the Seasonics are pretty darn expensive. They seem to fit the bill though from the NewEgg reviews. Quiet.

ROFL. Well, to quote your OP, "you get what you pay for"... I thoght you learned that the first time. ;)

I've had Seasonics thus far, and they are wonderful PSUs. Current machine (in progress) has a Corsair 620w in it... Looking forward to seeing how this baby does.

Man, $100 bucks though. I hate being PO. Maybe I can stick the computer in the closet and buy extension cables for cheaper. >=)

I'd recommend a Corsair HX, either the 520w or 620w whichever your system needs. I'm currently using the 620w version, it's very quiet and (so far) very reliable.

Try to find some Seasonic bulk PSUs. They're actually not much different from the S12 PSUs but don't look as fancy and are a lot cheaper (model name is SS-401HT). Don't know if you can get them in the US, but they're very popular in some German forums. The 400W version is about 48? while the 430W S12 kost about 65-70? here. It also has 29A on the two 12V rails, same as the S12 430W.
They're actually quite similar to the old Super Tornado PSUs which were great.

Also check out the forums of silentpcreview.com, they might be able to recommend some budget "silent" PSUs.

Check out this review: http://www.silentpcreview.com/article261-page1.html
SPCR recommended PSUs: http://www.silentpcreview.com/article699-page1.html

You can get the 401Ht on ebay for ~50$

If you are trying to power the system in your signature the 330 or 380 watt S12 will power your system just fine.

In fact the 380 watt S12 will run almost any single CPU non-SLI/Crossfire system you could put together.

Yeah, the 330 or 380W S12 should be fine. I'm running an A64 venice OC'ed to 2,4GHz, two HDs and a Geroce 8800GTS just fine of my old 400W Seasonic Super Tornado which only has 22A on the 12V line, but it runs just fine.
I'm getting a 401HT nonetheless, I need another PSU anyway and the SUper Tornado will probably go in my new mATX "silent" internet & work PC.

I can't stand it! The Ultra power supplies suck (as if you didn't know that already.) As punishment for buying crap I'm making myself wait until the rebates come in before I buy the Seasonic. This has two good points:

1) It might go on sale in the next 6 to 8 weeks.
2) It will turn me into a man who knows patience as a virtue. I blow my wad way too fast.

You can always get a decent fan and replace the one in your PSU - not hard to do but you might have to cut & splice the fan leads. I've used small wire nuts before to do that but solder and shrink tubing are much better. A lot cheaper than buying another PSU..

I recommend the Enahnce 5140GH 400W and very quiet for only $57.68. They also have a 500W version for $69. These PSU's have had excellent reviews and would be your best bang for the buck and they are quiet!

Enhance is supposedly very good, I personally use the Seasonic S12-600. The Corsairs are made by Seasonic, and you can get the 520w version for under $100.

We've all done it at one point before ... the good news is that now you have a backup for yourself or a friend.

Anyway ... personal problems aside ... there have been some good recommendations here. It used to be that I didn't mind spending a lot of money on a nice power supply as it could last me a few builds. Now though with the power supply standards and requirements changing so fast ... I'm like you I want something good but also inexpensive.

OK so I still don't know how to wait. I went ahead and pulled the trigger on a Seasonic S12-430W. I justified this purchase for several resasons:

1) I ordered a North Bridge cooler which will force me to take the motherboard out. This part needs to go in immediately.
2) I might as well change the PS since the motherboard is coming out.
3) My financial aid check is already in the mail. =)

I just bought that Ultra V-500 F.A.R. and much to my surprise it's extremely quiet. The tech support guy on Ultra's forum said the ones that are loud have a messed up fan controller which is common from rough shipping because they ship with no foam inside the box.You should send it to Ultra under their Lifetime warranty.

Noice. I'll definitely ship this thing off as soon as the Seasonic arrives.

Hot Dang! The Seasonic is a dream come true. Now the loudest thing I can hear is the hard disk accessing. I feel like I'm using a giant laptop.

I'm about to embark on a new build and I was wondering what case your using?

Hopefully I can make mine as silent as your's is. Except I may ruin that if I get a 8800GTX :)
