I recommend Hegemony Gold: Wars of Ancient Greece if you like RTS type games. Though it is quite a bit different from any other RTS game I've played.

Huh, I hadn't heard of this one, but looks interesting.

As if I don't have enough else to play and not enough time. :)

Not sure why it has not been mentioned more but Hotline Miami is incredibly entertaining, i recently finished it and while you do die a lot it does not frustrate at all, had a great time through all the chapters.

Bastion is another hit with great story telling and beatifully drawn graphics, i am currently playing through it.

I thought about it but the OP specifically said

not into side scrollers or platforms or stuff that looks 16-bit

Just a warning, this game takes a serious time commitment if you plan to finish it. It took me about 125 hours to finish the main campaign. You could always give the demo a try. (available on Steam or their site: http://www.longbowgames.com/hegemony/ )

The only reason I ended up with it is because its predecessor was under $3 on one of the Steam sales years ago. I gave it a try and got hooked. Sadly it doesn't seem to get a lot of attention. The good news is they're working on a sequel, which I can't wait for.

Yeah it looks like something from the NES era but it's still a good game.

Another good one is Don't Starve, i bought it while it was in beta and it kept me for a while but I'm really awful at sand box games.

If you have a couple of friends Cube World is a great exploration rpg, though the price is a bit steep for an indie game, it's really hard at the beginning but it gets better as you level.

So.. what's the deal with randomly generated environments? Yes, different every time, but the developers lose the ability for good solid environment design, yes?

Randomly generated environments are a deterrent for me. I am making some assumptions, not the least of which is that it is easier to make a game with randomly generated environments than it is to actually design a good level. Lazy game making!

there still has to be a set of variables for the enviroment to be generated i suppose, and an algorithm to randomize all said variables

I don't consider randomly generated levels a deterrent. If done correctly, they can be a great thing. Just look at Diablo (the original, not 3). I think it all depends on how the randomly generated levels are implemented.
