Is Riverside all mellow? I'm trying to find something more upbeat by them.... like the voice and music, but makes me a little sleepy atm.

Yes for the most part.. they are very good though so don't let that turn you away. I wouldn't say they are that mellow though, they have some up beat stuff

i don't know what genre that is.

That song is pure brilliance, but always makes me think of Friday Night Lights now

It's called post rock and while it's an amazing song and a fantastic band, probably isn't what the OP is looking for. I re-suggest you check out ISIS.. sort of like EITS mixed with doom/metal. Very organic and slow evolving riffs.

Porcupine Tree
Between The Buried And Me
Liquid Tension Experiment (aka newer Dream Theater)
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum
Karnivool
Pain of Salvation

It's amazing, no matter how many of these threads come up I always end up finding some new music.

Some good stuff here.

I don't mind it, but I prefer more along the lines of 80/20 or 70/30... or just none at all.

In that case, I'll second what Platypus said: Check out ISIS. Panopticon and In the Absence of Truth are amazing - the earlier stuff is more harsh/less melodic... still good imo, depends on what you're into.

Blind Guardian - I find it hard to believe that you haven't heard them already, but if you haven't check them out because BG is one of the best power metal bands ever.

Spellblast - They sound like Sonata Arctica.

Tyr - Progressive metal with a little bit of folk influence, and they sing about vikings which is always cool 🙂

Wintersun - They're not pure power metal, and they have mostly growled vocals but everything else about them is amazing so you might want to give them a chance

Ensiferum - Same vocalist as Wintersun. They sound similar but Ensiferum has some folk influences.

Soilwork - Their work (especially the newer albums) sound somewhat like Scar Symmetry with growled verses and clean choruses.

Swallow the Sun - Doom/melodic death but they alternate between clean and growled vocals, and sound a bit like Opeth but without the needlessly long and meandering songs.

Turisas - Possibly the most epic band ever 🙂 They're a combination of folk and power metal with a mix of growled and clean vocals. "Holmgard and Beyond" is a good song to get started on them.

Poets of the Fall. You'll be into them. How do you feel about female vocalists? You can't go wrong with Nightwish. Or Lacuna Coil.

oh man, i'll have to take screenshots of my mp3 folders. i have tons of power metal and prog rock music.

Ayreon is probably my favorite followed by Blind Guardian and Demons and Wizards.

Power Metal - My power metal bands. Not all are good but most are.

Progressive Rock - My prog rock bands. Again, not all are good, but most are.

You really can't go wrong with anything in my lists.

Cant believe anyone has said Iron Maiden.

They're still #1 Metal band in my book.

I also second the recommendation for Blind Guardian.

A few others:

Edguy - (listen to songs: Theater of salvation, tears of the mandrake, how many miles, lavatory love machine)
Nightwish - (songs: She is my sin, Come cover me, Beauty of the Beast)
Sonata arctica - ( OP said he liked it so heres a song you might not know OP. "Peacemaker" its from a B-side single release).
Stratovarius - (songs: Black Diamond, Hunting high and low, Eagleheart, Destiny).
Kamelot - (songs: Wings of despair , Farewell )

Also if you like folk style metal with violins and flutes and you dont mind listening to lyrics in spanish:

Mago de Oz ( Songs: Fiesta Pagana, Molinos de viento, Jesus de Chamberi, Ciudad de los Arboles ).

Easily the best folk/power metal band in the world at the moment.

More melodic metal but if you've never heard of them I think you'd enjoy some of their songs.

In Flames

-Man Made God
-Cloud Connected
-I'm the Highway
-Colony
-The Quiet Place

Opeth...that's about all I have to say. You'll probably prefer their newer stuff (more variety). You really won't get much better.

Go to etree (link in my signature) and search for Buckethead. It's live and it's free (and 100% legal!).

I'll even recommend a show. 2008-07-05 is pretty good. Good show with a good recording.

torrent for 2008-07-05

49 Buckethead shows FREE at archive.org (the other link in my sig)

For the record, I have atleast 10 live Buckethead shows and the 2008-07-05 link above is probably one of the best quality recordings I've run across. It is a pretty damned good show to boot. With all things live though, sound quality is not always great. It's hit and miss, but nothing beats free!

EDIT: 2008-07-05 is also at archive.org
