I'm putting together a list myself. I'm going to have A LOT of free time over winter break so I figure that I'll just rent a bunch. Here's my list:

Trainspotting
Dirty Harry
The Manchurian Candidate (original)
Into the Wild
Apocalypse Now
Children of Men
A Clockwork Orange
There Will Be Blood

Resurrecting a dead thread ... just saw Rang De Basanti .... WOW!!!!!!!!! This movie has it all. An amazing story, great cinematography, wonderful characters. This movie is an absolute masterpiece.

Serious movies that aren't boring:

High and Low (Kurosawa/Mifune 1960s mystery) - a little slow but good
The Eel - interesting drama
I Have Always Loved You - good drama
Kieslowski's Three Colors trilogy - are some of my favorites (Blue and Red/Rouge anyway)
Eat Drink Man Woman - food folks 'n' fun

Less serious movies

Le dernier combat / The Last Combat - Luc Besson's black & white near silent post apocalyptic movie
The Crimson Rivers (Jean Reno)
The Big Blue - free divers (Jean Reno)
Run Lola Run
Princess and the Warrior

Not at all serious movies:

Wasabi - Jean Reno in Japan
Versus - zombie-ghost-highlander in Japan
Wild Zero - Japanese zombies and Guitar Wolf
The Stink of Flesh - zombies!

13th warrior. saw it being talked about a few times on ATOT and just saw it a couple days ago and it was pretty awesome. very old school.

Secret Life Of Bees, Dakota Fanning is unbelievably good in it. Stories pretty good, Alicia Keys looks great and is a good actor. Actually everyone in the movie was great.

deep throat, little mermaid, cinderella, snow white, alien - part pack , underworld triology, hurt locker
