I really liked the first Dune but then read the second book of the series and thought it sucked.

I highly recommend anything by Arthur C. Clarke. The man has a gift for telling boring sci-fi setups in a way that keeps you from putting the book down.

something with an engaging and immersive plot is preferable. i've heard the "ender's game" series is good. any suggestions?

thanks

Holy sh1t! I was just going to recommend the enders series. I have read almost all of them. Phenominal books. I would have to say to lord morpheus that they are not nyounger audience books. If you have read past enders game/shadow it gets a lot more involved. I am still astonished you know of Card. Nobody I know has heard of him or the ender series.

The man won a Hugo award. I'd say the secret is out. 😉

On that note, Ender's Game is really good. Definitely one to have in a collection.

Everyone knows about his books, don't they? Oh, and Ender's Shadow is a great book to go along with Ender's Game.

And I second the Clarke recommendation.

If you like Sci-Fi Fantasy I'd recommend books by Steven R. Donaldson, Jack Chalker (who just passed) & Piers Anthony -- I'll have to look at my book case -- these stand out , and Battlefield Earth, regardless of the movie, is a really good book. Also, don't forget Stephen Kings stuff, especially the Dark Tower series.

Anyone interested in starting a book swapping club?

Any and all Heinlein will be a good choice. Also, I've enjoyed Stephen Baxter's Manifold: Time, Space and Origin recently.

The Ender series is a good read. Anything by Charles Sheffield is good, same with Robert J Sawyer (check out the Neanderthal Parallax by him his recent trilogy its really good). Generally Larry Niven is a pretty good author I have read a number of his books. Isaac Asimov, Robert A Heinlein most of those older authors wrote very good books and were pioneers in their field.

i went with and just finished "mutineer's moon" because it was free from that baen's online library and the premise seemed interesting.

enjoyed it a lot. i think i enjoy reading a lot more than i used to.

time to pay a visit to the public library, get a card and take out some books 🙂

what's with all the Orson Scott Card love? the blatent mormon propoganda in all of his recent books doesn't annoy anyone else?

I'd recommend that you read at least one of Clarke, Heinlein and Azimov. Those three basically pulled the genre out of pulp and gave it it's foundation (a-ha, a-ha)

For more recent work, I like Greg Bear, though I haven't been reading much Sci-fi recently. Also, Harry Turtledove's alternate history books have a lot in common conceptually with sci-fi.

Ohh, Forever War, forget the author's name, real good. (<---Me champion sentencer)

2001: a space odyssey

i just started really liking sci-fi after reading this. where i used to find sci-fi boring and at times difficult to follow, this book is easy to understand, and if you couldn't make heads or tails of kubrick's film version, this book will explain everything.

my only complaint was Clarke did not make HAL as scary as Kubrick did in the movie.

HAL scared the hell out of me in the film. that dude was up to no good 😛

Probably the best Sci-FI book of all time is Battlefield Earth.

Also it was made into the worst movie of all time. DO NOT watch the movie or you'll never be willing to read the book.

They Hyperion series and the Endymion (sp?) series

Enders Game

Armor by John Steakly (sp?). If they ever make a movie of this book it will break records.

I'm just sort of getting back into reading. I picked up a library card yesterday because I see no reason to purchase books, since I only read them once.

Wife likes Piers Anthony and pretty much anything with a dragon on the cover. She's a huge Stephen King fan.

I've been reading I, Robot and its pretty good so far. I might pick up some of asimov's other stuff.

I got "I am Legend" on reserve at the lizibrary, apparently some one else wanted to read a 50 year old book about a world overrun by vampires at the same time I did. I read the first chapter on Amazon and it teased me enough to really want to read it.

I'll have to pick up enders game, I haven't read that and it seems to be highly recommended.

Its good that you are reading the I, Robot series first. The end of Foundation series has certain bits of stories from I, Robot. The Foundation series is one of my favs.
