I'm not an anime buff, but I do crave and appreciate the genre.

I CANNOT, for the life of me, stand childish juvenile anime. This is my biggest criteria! Anime I loved are Evangelion, & Cowboy Bebop. Samurai Chanploo & Guranlagenn (although most childish of all) are worthy of mention.

Can't stand Bleach/Naruto/DBZ/Pokemon/etc...

So you know where I'm going with this. High production quality and entertaining storyline...

What's good and new in the last 5 years?

Gurren Lagann was good... until
they defeated the Spiral King and it got all retarded wanna-be philosophical

Hmm try watching Soul Eater. It's probably as "childish" as Gurren Lagann, but it's a decent series overall. Unfortunately, the series actually ends before the manga, so if you want to go past it, you'll have to break out them readin' glasses 🙂.

The new Full Metal Alchemist is almost done (has... 2 more episodes?), so you might want to try getting into that. It's 64 episodes long, so there's plenty to watch while the last episodes air.

EDIT:

The last series I finished was Cross Game, which is a drama mostly dealing with Baseball, but has a bit of a softer side to it than your typical Sports anime (Major probably being one of the best known baseball animes). I enjoyed it if you wouldn't mind a drama, but the first episode is a bit of a tear-jerker.

years ago, a local library had given it away and my mother picked it up for me knowing i liked anime. the cover looked less than exciting so i stowed it in a box... years later i found it going through some things and decided to give it a go. a very pleasant surprise!

tho to my knowledge its only 13 or so eps.
 
Also want to add: Kimi ga Nozomu Eien

That's probably the most anime show I've ever watched. It's pretty depressing so be warned.

Nothing really stands out nowadays like Bebop, Chanploo, and Eva did?
