87-93 fwd crysler/dodge/plymount should last you forever and would probably even pass inspection with a change of plugs and a new oxygen sensor, and it may not even need that.

If you're lucky you might even find a turbo charged one in your range.

Police Cruiser Auction?

You won't have to dick around with timing belt replacement or CV joint crap found on import or domestic FWD econoboxes. These cars are maintained to the hilt, and do have miles on them, but they're sturdy. Worth a look.

I'm sorry, but I have driven a lot of police cruisers and thier is a reason they are usually retired after 2 years tops. Do you really want a car that has been driven like a rental pretty munch 24 hours a day for two years, and had band aid maintenance done on it? I wouldn't trust an old cruiser except maybe an old caprice and then only if it was a highway patrol car.

Alternator, Starter, and Battery replaced: $250
Front left and right axles: $200

Having one of the most reliable 90 Cavalier in the area: Priceless

Lasted me three years... so $1,750/3 = $583.33 a year for it. Not bad considering I beat the crap out of it every day and it still wanted more. I guess it's just how you maintain your cars.

Any of the 2.2l/2.5l chryslers/plymouths/dodges will work. None of them are worth anything except for a few rare turbo models and they hold up well. They made a couple billion of the things so parts are almost free, junkyards are full of them, and for the most part the are easy to work on.

The RWD v8 domestics are another good choice. Around here you can find really nice 89ish licoln town cars with around 100k miles on them for less than $2k all over the place.

Beware of Pontiacs..... Many have engines that were manufactured in Brazil....not the greatest place to have an engine manufactured..... 😛

Again, Who buys used Police Cars? 70% Taxicabs and Livery service! How can that possibly be, if they're about to fall apart? These moderately priced, well maintained, heavy duty fleet vehicles are perfect for taxi service.

"...band aid maintenance done on it?"

I don't know about your neck of the woods, but our patrol cars are not maintained by shade tree mechanics around here!

Here's one I could have bought last summer for $2,000.00. Here's the place that sells them. It was an early '90s with 82,000 miles on it. Here are the minutes to a meeting in 2002, where Action Auto Wholesale purchased a 1994 Ford Crown Victoria w/police package at 80,812 miles. He sells a lot of these cars on Ebay to people all over the country.

I'm Canadian and the government vehicle auction selection seems pretty weak...the only link I can find is here. Not much selection.

I'm leaning towards a Chrysler New Yorker, Dynasty, etc. I've rode in a few and I really like the interior, damn comfy!

Or a Ford Probe. These cars look like awesome cheap rides! A little bit pushing the budget, though.

Any thoughts on Probes?

Thanks to everyone who gave the serious replies!

You want a good car with cheap parts, low maintainence, and high gas milage?

Ford Festiva. Yes, it's very underpowered. No, it's not comfortable, but it will keep on going. Mine has 187,700 miles on it. I paid $600 for it two years ago.
