Recommend me a washer and dryer

If you want the best washer, buy commercial.

If you want something affordable that will last awhile, look for estate sales in your area.

Yeah, that's why I'm looking on Craigslist - any particular brands to look for?

I'd like to stay under $1k for both (preferably as little as possible but something that will last a long time), so I am guessing new is not the best option.

Nothing wrong with buying used especially if it saves you some cash. I say go take a look at those that you posted links to and do some online research.
If one of them looks good go ahead and buy it.

What's the expected lifespans of newer stuff like this? Expected to break after a few years, or do they last a while?

seriously tho, I've had good luck with my kenmore washer and dryer set bought new in '98, never had any trouble with them.

Whirlpool makes decent washer/dryers. The story may be different if we're talking dishwashers, but their washing machines are decent.

When I bought my house, I bought a new GE washer/dryer from Lowes. After 3 years, the dryer crapped out and the washer is starting to show problems. I replaced the dryer already with a used one I got from Craigslist for 1/5 the price I paid for the GE. And it has a ton of features my old one didn't.

So me personally, I stick with used for my washer dryer. It's not an appliance that's "visible" like your fridge or stovetop so even if it has any dings (mine was in mint condition), it's no big deal. And if it breaks, I won't feel as bad 😀

LG has been pretty good aside from the fact that nobody seems to service them. I've had the LG front load washer/dryer for about 5 years without any major problems. The washing machine barrel came off the springs once from being imbalanced when I put a small rug in it. I had to call about 15 places before I found someone who would fix it.

Top load is shit, buy front load. :awe:

Front load washers have problems, I would not buy one used.
I personally would buy a used top load washer.
Always buy used driers. IF you can use a multimeter are actually pretty easy to service yourself if they break down.

General consensus seems to be avoid GE. 😛 Whirlpool/Maytag/Kenmore.. I'll hunt for those.

Kenmore is just Sears' house brand. Their product are made by a WIDE variety of manufacturers. You could end up with a Whirlpool, an LG, or ???

I have the Whirlpool Duet front loader steam thing and the steamer dryer. I hated front loaders, but these are winning right now. They are awesome, never iron again with a steam dryer!

When my current set break, I'm going with back to old school with Speed Queen. Here's a sample:

It's to wash my clothes so I don't need fancy electronics show piece. I also don't like the front load machines which doesn't let me add stuffs not to mention mold issues (yeah, I had one). This is the heavy duty brand you find at most laundromats. Best of all they're made in USA.

Speed Queen makes damned good machines.

I prefer a top-load machine so I can "soak" clothes that are extra-dirty. (remember, I worked construction for decades)
Front loaders don't give you that option. (although you CAN usually run them for a while then stop them...and the clothes "soak" after a fashion)
