Newb Android user looking for suggestions, as title says. Google searches have turned up about five that look promising, including Astrid, GTask, and Taskos. It's hard to tell from the screenshots what functionality they have, and I'd rather not download a bunch to try and decide.
I don't care about synching between devices, or sharing tasks, or anything like that. I really just want a replacement for a paper list. Main thing I'm looking for is to be able to have sub-tasks.
i.e. I have a list that says Car, Motorcycle, Groceries, Home. And when I select Car, I see change brake pads, change oil, new wipers, etc.

Also would like the ability to check/strike-through completed tasks, but have them remain visible.

I'm open to all suggestions. Thanks.

Color Note is nice, and would do what you need. Make a red note, with the title CAR, and then put multiple line items for gas, brakes, etc. When you click one out, it gets a line through it but you can still see what was there originally.

i use google tasks and Gtasks on my phone. you can set a due day for a task. if i have something time sensitive, i add it as a google calendar entry and edit as necessary with details and reminder pop ups.

gtasks is nice on the phone, and you can get a google task plugin for the chrome browser (maybe others?) that lets you edit without going into gmail.

edit in the app, the plugin or your gmail account and they all sync up. love it. pretty much use this feature of gmail every day.

Wunderlist (lifehacker's choice) is unfortunately not compatible with Pure Calendar, which renders it useless for a lot of people. Also, no recurring tasks? Seriously? Definitely useless.

I use Astrid -- it does tags and not categories, though, so I don't think it necessarily fits what the OP asked for.
