Hello all,

My beloved Iphone was shattered in an attempted robbery yesterday morning on the NYC subway. Some kid tried to pry it out of my hand, but I had some kind of death grip on it and he could not. During the struggle, which was on the stairway leading to the 4,5 train, someone else yanked the kid's hand off my phone, but also yanked the phone out of my hand. As other commuters were streaming all around us on the staircase, someone trampled it.

The screen is completely ruined. It's not just cracked glass; the backlight functions and I can still interact with it (i can even take calls via muscle memory) but I can't see a thing. The phone is also still functional - when I plug it in to my PC, it boots Itunes, etc.

Anyway, I called AT&T and Apple. Apple claimed to be capable of replacing the screen for a svelte $200, but when I brought it to the store, the genius bar advised me that they can only repair cracked glass, not an eviscerated touch screen.

AT&T, for its part, told me that (1) I would need to reup my contract for another 2 years in order to purchase another Iphone and (2) that I would also be given the pleasure of having to pay the full MSRP for the phone, despite agreeing to a new contract - a brisk $500. Oh, and if I didn't buy a new device, I'd still have to pay my phone bill or be reported to a collection agency. I resisted the urge to punch the guy in the face.

So, I'm strongly considering giving AT&T and its shit network the finger, giving them their cancellation fee with the hopes they choke on it, and subsequently going back to Verizon. The Droid and the Droid Incredible both look awesome. A few questions:

I couldn't find this, but I assume it's a standard feature: the Incredible plays MP3s and video files, yeah? Really, all I do with my smart phone is email, text, listen to music at the gym and movies on flights. Any thoughts on the quality of the Incredible in those areas? Any other phone recommendations?

Thanks all. Sorry for the extended rant.

Pretty much all smartphones play music and video. Droid Incredible is currently the highest end smartphone on the market. If picture/video quality are really important to you, AMOLED screens and high resolutions are what you want, which is what the Droid Incredible has.

The original Droid is an excellent device as well. It's better suited for texting and typing up emails than the Incredible but it's not as fast and doesn't have the AMOLED screen.

If you have your heart set on leaving ATT, then my advice probably won't help you out, but maybe you could consider: getting a cheap dumbphone (since your SIM obviously works) and just use that until the new iphone comes out. If you have had your current iphone for 18 mos or longer, you will be able to get the subsidized price.

This is assuming you even liked your iphone of course hah

But he would have to pay his full monthly service (including data) until the phone does come out. Which Apple has stated has been pushed back for months....meh

The Incredible for sure plays MP3's (check out ^3).

Well, currently I'm using an older blackberry 8800 (got it from work) - it does the job, but it's quite dated at this point. I can use the edge network, even if it sucks. For some reason I can't get my contacts off my sim card, however.

Anyway, I guess I can hold out for the new Iphone, but when is that coming up? I know details of the 4G leaked, but there's no release date, right? I don't have any problem with the iphone - I thought it was a great device, actually. I have a bunch of accessories for it as well...might be worth holding out.

If you do make the switch to Verizon, the Droid Incredible is your best bet right now.

Don't mean to thread hijack, but do you have a link? I must have missed the announcement that it wasn't going to be the usual June or July timeframe.

With WWDC happening in June, I don't see why they would have a release later than July.

It was on HLN I believe. It was the same piece where they were talking about the editor having charges filed against him.

Just disregard that statement. I should watch Robin in the morning with the sound off :p
