Can you recommend something with good audio quality and that does not look as something out of a bad sci-fi movie? It should be less than $200. I want to have something by my computer, so I don't need anything fancy.

Are there alternatives, such as lower-priced components? I don't care if it's a discontinued model, or maybe even refurb'd if it has some warranty. Possible to find a receiver, cd player and speakers for about $200?

Thanks!

Is playing CDs the only thing you need it to do?

CD's and FM.

If it was just CDs, I was going to suggest something like Swan m200s and a really cheap CD player / DVD player.

Besides the bunch of mini-systems that are out there, it would be possible to get a bookshelf speaker / cheap receiver combo going.

Polk R15s are on sale right now from outpost.com for abour $50/pair for example. There aren't a whole lot of affordable receiver options out there, but you could get one for about $100 or so. That should leave you plenty to pick you a cd player.

Example cheap stereo receiver new retail: http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Sherwood...atOid/-12949/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

I think at this price point it doesn't make any difference. But don't listen to me, I'm not the Soundman.

I had the feeling I can get better quality by getting separate components. Maybe I'll get those Polk and look for a receiver. Are speakers and receivers all compatible?

I'll also seriously consider those Swans. I'd love to have a more portable setup, instead of big receivers and speakers.

Thanks for the great suggestions.

speakers and receivers are generally mix and match.

you may want to check out garage sales, goodwill/salvation army, etc, for the amp

No problem. If you can spend more somewhere, the speakers/sub are the place to do it.

If you like music with bass in it, save up for a dayton 10" or 12" sub from partsexpress (I made a thread in Hot deals).

Thanks. Because I already have 2 mini systems whose CD players don't work anymore, I decided to get the Polk speakers and a receiver (probably the Onkyo refurb). I'll look for a CD changer, but certainly not a Sony. Reviews of their current model complain about the same problem of my 7-yr old unit: it stops after playing 1 or 2 discs.
