They usually aren't pure down; it's a mixture of down and feathers. The actual down is the fluffy feathers under the main coat of a bird. More down=higher cost.

Get a foamed latex pillow. They are a bit expensive, but worth it. I bought one 2 years ago when my wife and I bought a new bed. The bed is ok. The pillow is one of the best purchases I've made in my life. High praise for a pillow, I know. But in all seriousness, I have never slept better.

If you decide to go the latex route, make sure you go to a store for a test. There are a million different varieties (levels of firmness, width, cover material, etc.) to choose from.

Check out target. They have a whole isle of pillows, with different levels of firmness for different types of sleepers.

I use a down pillow myself, I don't know how people sleep on those huge puffy foam pillows.
