I am currently running IE so if that is the problem I am willing to fix it. Just looking for something that sits in the background and does it's job. Doesn't have to be fancy.

Downloaded Firefox and Ad Block Plus and it works like a dream. Thanks for the advice.

You can also disable Flash in IE if you want. Go to Tools > Internet Options > Programs > Manage Add-Ons, and set the Shockwave Flash Object entry to Disabled.

I cast another vote for Firefox Adblock. It's very effective. Source

I just noticed there are several Firefox addons with the word 'Addblock' in their names. The one linked above is the one I use. I haven't experienced the others, they might be even better, I don't know.

Secondary layer: install & frequently update your hosts file.

No use for MS IE except for Windows updates, and for a couple of banks that require the ActiveX. Otherwise, Firefox FTW!

Im sorry, but I'm not going to be like everyone else and tell you to switch. The truth is you don't have to. Don't get me wrong, I have and use Firefox. However, lately I've found myself using IE7 more.

Here is how I get by with using IE7 (Im pretty sure most of these work in IE6, if that's what you are using):

Admuncher
Inline Search
Google Toolbar for my GoogleBookmars
Google Preview
SiteAdvisor

Rather than telling you to switch browsers, I hope that listing these links will have answered your question (and then some). Also another program that blocks ads in IE, although I feel is more sluggish, is Proximatron.

For IE, Helexis Ads Filter is good. There's an older free version. It does not, however, block flash. So I just leave that disabled until it must specifically be required to view some crappy site.

For most people--the improved pop up blocking features of firefox--mozilla--or seamonkey--are way better than ie6. And ie7 is better than ie6. And this thread also points out that various steps or program additions can enhance the ability of any browser to block pop ups.---but I find the stock features of firefox and seamonkey are enough to give me almost total victory over popups.

But what is perhaps being missed is the fact that various malware that may be infesting the OP's computer can also trigger popups---and the OP should be scanning his computer to remove as many of these rascals as possible.---and then post a hijackthis log file on something like spyware warriors forums to get the rest. Even an antique program like ad-aware will get about 95% of malware for zero dollars invested---running others free online scans should get the OP to about 98%---but that last 2% can be tough.---which is why a hijackthis log file helps--and once you have a clean PC--get a multi-layered anti-malware strategy implemented to keep their PC malware free.

Then get Ad Block Plus:

Also good idea to get Filterset:

I find that you have to use ALL of the lists built in to AdBlock Plus (pick the USA one first then add all the others afterwards).
Then update the Filterset. The Filterset gets a lot of ads that the AdBlock Plus ones miss.

 i use the exact same thing with all of the filters. i see absolutely no ads/popups at all. its actually pretty rare in the times that i actually do see an ad/popup.
