2012 - cheesy but plenty of action and crazy world exploding type scenes. And the special effects are pretty good.

It's also way too damn long, but yeah, it had some fun parts. I like Woody!

Moon(2009) is GREAT. Awesome mood and amazing what you can do with just 1 actor the whole movie.

On the Beach. An old film from 1959 that might make a good Valentines Day movie because of a subplot exploring the power of love and dedication to one's career despite the impending end of the world.

Would Waterworld qualify? While it's not a great movie, it's not as horrible as it was made out to be. Speaking of Costner films, there was also The Postman, which was not nearly as good.

Night of the living dead came out in 68' and Omega Man 71'. How do you figure?

I Am Legend was written in 1954 - as in the story by Richard Matheson which all of the movies were based on.

edit: whoops I see someone already posted a link. That.

Omega Man was a remake of The Last Man on Earth from 1964.
I don't think there's any way you can characterize Omega Man as a remake if you've seen both. Two very different takes on the original story. If anything the Vincent Price original is the closest of the three to the story, and it ain't really all that close.

Meh, they are the same movie as far as I'm concerned. Terrible, but with a few cool/fun parts.

KT

You know what.. I have a feeling that Roland Emmerich has a soft corner for the third world. In both these movies there is long scene.. in which a high profile first world person.. either praises or offers apology to the third world.

Maybe that is the reason his movies do so well worldwide. :hmm:

Not a movie, but a short lived TV series that I really wished the networks didn't cancel so soon...

Jericho

and another popcorn flick:

The Core

Maybe:

Dreamcatcher
The Day the Earth Stood Still
9
Knowing
The Matrix movies
(One I can't think of the name - a society of survivors living underground and their support systems are failing, so a couple kids search for a way to the surface.)
City of Ember (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0970411/). Not a bad movie actually.

Read the book - The Postman, don't watch the horrible movie.

Same with Battlefield Earth. Read L. Ron Hubbard's book. It isn't at all Scientology, its fairly good sci-fi. Damn good sci-fi actually.

I'm about half way in of The Road.

Holy crap the pacing is slow. Yes, I get that father & son is trying to survive, but just not enough things are happening.

Sunshine, although I guess its more about a mission to save a slowly dying earth, than it is post-apocalyptic.

Well, this thread has gone downhill fast...

"Knowing" is a horrible piece of crap. And I'm sorry to say it, because I really wanted to see another good movie from Alex Proyas.
"Sunshine" is another example of a misfire from an otherwise talented director (and a rip-off of "Event Horizon", among others.)
The least said about the two versions of "The War of the Worlds" mentioned here, the better.

"The Postman" goes to the post-apocalypse genre, just like "Mad Max" (2 and 3) and "Waterworld" (as well as "Eli" and "Doomsday"). It doesn't actually depict the end of civilisation. Same for "The Road". "Moon" is a great movie, but has no place here.

I am encouraged to see recommendations for Tarkovsky films, although I'd personally choose "Sacrifice" for this thread (there's nothing truly "end-of-the-world" about "Stalker"). KeithTalent has a good eye for movies.

There is a movie named "Silent Running" I've always wanted to see; I think it's post-apoc. Now that this thread made me remember it, I'm going to have to look it up on netflix.

The only "end of the world apoc" movie I can think of is The Matrix...
