Recommend me a good DVD Player...

Requirements: HD Compatability, plays DVD, VCD, and DVD+R w/ AVI files (DivX) on them. Component out and optical audio out.

The Panasonic DVD-S77S seems to be the best for the money for what you're looking for. The Oppo player is supposed to be excellent, but it only offers 480i over component (it's really meant more as a DVI/HDMI player, and its Faroudja chip is on a daughterboard with the DVI out).

Onkyo 802 DVD player.

Excellent video and audio quality for its price range.

Holy expensive batman!

I don't need a 6-disc changer...just a single is fine. Not looking to spend over $200.

well if you don't want to spend 200+

you can look at HDMI upconverting DVD players for around 140 bucks at best buy

HDMI doesn't help me at the moment...I don't have an HDTV right now....but would like something that supports it. Mainly I want something that will play DivX...which I can't seem to find if that Panasonic does. I have TV shows and stuf that I record that I want to be able to back up and also watch on the DVD player.

i don't think i've seen a hdmi dvd player that supports divx

and yes i agree the onkyo is a bargain for the quality you get

The Oppo does, though it's technically a DVI player rather than HDMI, so you don't have the convenience of running audio through a DVI cable.

I have the S77 and I like it. I don't know if it plays divx though...

About HD compatability - The oppo and the panasonic s77 both have issues with macroblocking.

This only get enhanced when you use the digital outputs for HD upconversion. It's a problem based on the faroudja scaler/deinterlacer.

The players don't enhance macroblocking when outputting via component.

At component, the s77 appears to be the better player. The oppo is great at digital video out, but the component is somewhat lacking from reviews I looked at.

DVD player shootout

I was thinking that too.

That plays divx, doesn't it?

"NOPLAY"

D'oh! Good to know, in any case. I need a player myself, and have been vascillating between the S77 and the Oppo. I can't see spending more on a DVD player at this point.

Edit: bah, didn't see the price ceiling in your second post. Nevermind. 🙂
