I'm looking to rent an apartment near UT Austin since i'll be starting college in spring.
I've seen a lot of apartments on rent.com and forrent.com but i'd like to get first hand info about some places ppl have lived in.

as a poor student i can't afford a car so i'd rather they're on the UT shuttle route or at least the metro route.
I've read of a lot of problems in some apartments (from hookers, druggies ot rats and mold) so please give me you opinions in the safety, how well maintained , location and other any other helpful info.

to ppl who don't know anything about apartments in Austin please give any tips, helpful advice or warning you can think of in the renting an apartment.

thank you very much

There's some decent places north of campus along Red River that are in walking distance of the school (Red River north of Dean Keeton/26th Street). The biggest cluster of places in walking distance is west campus (anything west of Guadalupe, generally between like 26th Street & MLK), but's frathouse/party central. If you're not going to have a car, there's lots of cool stuff within walking distance of either location.

In terms of getting more apt for your money, Far West has newer/nicer and is on the Shuttle Bus. The Arboretum area is nice, but getting kind of far out (NW of Austin up 183). There's also some nice places in Terry Town. Generally, the ares East of I-35 are bad, there are some questionable places on Riverside. If you have any questions about specific places, feel free to PM me.

I know a lot about apartments around UT Austin. First I lived pretty far down Guadalupe close to Airport Blvd, before I knew the layout of the city. After that I lived on Riverside, and it sucked. Then I moved to North Campus, El Dorado on 35th and Speedway, which was great. It was about a 15 min walk to campus (I usually biked), and quiet. I think there were maybe 3 parties, and when that girl moved out, there were no more. If you don't have a bike, buy one and ride around north campus and see if there are any places you like.

Edit: Also, that area is biking distance from any parties you'd want to go to... unless you're some nut who enjoys going to Riverside.

And don't pay more than $500 for a 1 bedroom, or $400 for a studio.
