Looking for lcd which must be perfect for gaming.

17-19 inch size, less than 20 ms response time, around 500:1 contrast ratio.

budget is $500-$700ish.

Im seconding the 2001FP. Also, sometimes dell offers deals on monitors, you can get it for 750-800 shipped.

i was planning on getting the samsung 172x. I heard great reviews about it and if you get it, you could be my gineau pig.....lolz JK

Seriously speaking, i was really close on getting the samsung 172x. I heard about its great 12ms response time and how well it produces colors. Reports have it that its experiencing a little to none ghosting on movies. It also looks really nice so thats always the icing on the cake. If you do decide to get it, post back and tell me whatcha think of it.

Cheapest 19 inch monitor you can get. No ghosting at all. Awesome quality

I saw that 19" lcd the other day when I was looking online for parts. I thought the price was good plus it seems to have some really good user feedback. I might have to consider getting one.

25ms responce time seems high but I don't see any problems with the monitor. It's sitting in the kitchen, getting sent to my roommate's parent's house tomorrow. :brokenheart:

My father has a Samsung 172, and it is hard to beat the quality of that monitor for that price. However, I hear BenQ monitors are pretty good and a little cheaper.

I've heard the 18" Dell and 20" Dell but nobody has suggested the 19" Dell. I have two of these, two of my roommates have 2 of these each. We all love them. Great on gaming and you can get them ~$600 or so when a hot deal rolls around.

Just to comment on those recommendations for the 20" Dell: Keep in mind that the native resolution is 1600x1200 so if your system can't handle running a game at that resolution, then you're stuck running at a non-native resolution (which I avoid like the plague because it looks like crap). So in these cases, getting the 20" would be a bad idea. But if you think you can run all games at 1600x1200, then it really is a great monitor!

Jaxidian brings up the only real down side of a LCD for gaming. Running outside the native resolution could cause images to become blurry or cause Interpolation. So if you want to run 1600x1200 or even higher, you will want to pair it up with the best video card you can afford. The X800's and 6800's are really the only ones that can handle such high resolution (for every game) adequately for present games and more importantly future games.

You could run 800x600 and it would work fine.

Yeah, exactly as Regs says. If you don't get one of the newest cards out there now (X800's or 6800's), then you'll kick yourself in the ass when trying to play some of the newest games (FarCry) or new games in the future (say Everquest 2) at 1600x1200. However, something that may be worthwhile if you aren't playing any of the most advanced games is to get one of the 1600x1200 LCDs, power it by a 9800Pro (for under $200), and then in a year or two, upgrade again to the best $200 card you can find. You'll end up with a better-than (or just as good as) X800/6800 and should be okay. But if you want to play the latest and greatest now at 1600x1200, then you have to dish out all that money now for the video card.

In my opinion, 1280x1024 LCD is ideal for gaming for now until another generation or two of video cards come out.

Samsung 710 T (identicle to 172X but cheaper, and with a better contrast ratio)

Good pick. The viewing angels are sharp with no jaggies or loss color reproduction. Possibly one of the best for gaming needs.

Looking at company "ms" is completely useless information.

The most important thing to look for is the difference in "ms" between rise and fall. If the difference is too great you get ghosting.

That's why some LCDs that have an advertised 25ms response time have almost no ghosting in most games and others that have 16ms have really horrible ghosting. The rise is usually fast and the fall is too slow.

A very high contrast ratio 1:500+ also helps reduce ghosting but its a combination of things that cause or prevent ghosting, not one thing.

Usually you have to give up one of these important things for another. Its very rare to find LCDs that have all the right settings. Its like trying to find the perfectly round cheese omlet. Not gona happen.

Another obscure thing to look for is heat disipation. Some LCDs get really hot and have poor airflow, which will eventually cause the LCD to show poor contrast and colours since the crystals will eventually get affected by the heat. This is hard to get around but some of the better Dell monitors suffer from this, so you are pretty much playing Russian roulette. Its just a matter of time. How long? Good question. Could take years.

Another obscure thing to look for is the gray to gray response time. Which are currently not being tested by most companies but are switching to it. Its sometimes shocking how slow some of these LCDs are, some in the 100ms range. Ouch. Its a real "ouch" if you game because it effects ghosting the most and games that have a heavy use of black on blacks or a lot of dark backgrounds with dark foregrounds (Halo in the tunnels esp multiplayer) will cause obvious ghosting.

Price doesn't protect you from any of these. Only research does. I'm not even half done yet.

There are plenty of cheap LCDs that are great for gaming and lots more that are expansive that suck wang.

Personally I'm still in search of a widescreen LCD for gaming. No luck yet. They pretty much all suck wang.
