Similar to Age of Empires. And preferably nothing in the fantasy realm (Warcraft). Not that all of these games aren't in the fantasy category, but you know what I mean...

Rome: Total War

I've also heard the new LOTR RTS game is good, but that may be too much fantasy for you.
 
Rome: Total War. Empire Earth II is also looking very good. RoN was a great game, when it was released. Now it's merely a good game. Rome: Total War confirmed that no real-time strategy game should be without a 3D engine. And that seperating the actual battles and economic/city-building sections should be a prerequisite for any RTS game. Plus some of RoN's quirks drove me nuts. Horses breaking tanks?! 😛
 
I tried the demo of Empire Earth 2, looks good. Quite a bit different than other games in the approach to gameplay.
