You could probably pick up a decent Hyundai Tiburon for that. A friend of mine has one and loves it. Dunno how you feel about Hyundais though.

I can't speak to 2-door stick shifts <$8K; probably Miata or something?

If you can get over the 2-door part, pick up a late 90's/early 00's Subaru Legacy GT. Decent mileage, with some simple shocks+springs+sways you have a car that handles like a dream. Plus AWD is sweet of course. There were 2-door Impreza's at some point...

Hmm.. I would prefer something which was manufactured later than 2000. I dont want to spend too much on maintanance.
Subaru's are low maintenance. You can get an early 2000 Subbie, but it won't be a 2-door Impreza.

mustang (gt or v6)
sentra
imprezza 2.5rs (pre-03 can be 2dr)
tons of em man...check out: auto.consumerguide.com ...some decent reviews

Firebird/Trans-Am or Camaro.

Cheap, VERY fast, and easy to work on.

Firebird/ Trans-Am is definitely one of ths options that I am looking at very keenly. I love that car. 🙂
Problem is the 2000+ F-Bodies are still pretty expensive and over $8K. You're going late 90's then. Make sure you get a 98 or newer, has the better LS1 V8. But then again, you won't get 20MPG city unless you grandma, and you won't see above that. You may find a 5-speed V6, but they're few & far between.
