recommend me a BBQ smoker

I know a lot of people on here are avid BBQers. I've decided to replace the gas grill with either smoker or possibly a smoker/grill combo.

Any suggestions?

I don't need anything too big... an 18 # turkey would be the upper limit to what I might smoke. mostly I'll jsut be doing brisket and ribs.

weber smokey mountain grill

I BBQ a lot and all my friends agree this makes some seriously good bbq. Better than a dry smoker.

Downfall is that it doesn't work well as a grill. You can do it, but it just won't generate enough heat.

As a grill it is worthless.

So just get a bullet, weber kettle, a nice gas grill and a large deep fryer. All bases covereed.

Thanks for the info guys. I've thought about getting a smoker to supplement my gas grill, but I always thought they were huge like the one my father-in-law has (I think it's a smoker-grill combo). This might make a good Christmas present for myself (everyone hates shopping for me for Christmas, because I can never decide what I want).

If you aren't opposed to staying with gas, I highly recommend the Smoky Mountain Gas Smoker. Personally, I find it much easier to regulate the temperature with gas, and I wouldn't trade the vertical layout with front-opening door for anything now that I have used one. If you must have charcoal, I know Brinkmann makes some vertical smokers that have gotten good reviews.

Edit: I switched to my current smoker from the Brinkmann equivalent model to the Weber Smokey Mountain, and I wouldn't go back. Granted, the Weber may be better than the Brinkman, but I will never know. 🙂

Get a Chargriller with a sidebox. That gets you a grill when you need it and a smoker/indirect cooker when you need it.

This is the one I got:
Grill with a sidebox

It isn't fancy, and bbqgalore is pretty overpriced and I bet you can do better elsewhere on the price.

I have only made a couple of racks of ribs on it so far, but they were very very good.

That gas smoker is sweet! I might have to pick one up. Charcoal smoking is too much of a hassle for me. You have to baby sit and keep adding coal. Regulating temperature is hard with charcoal also. I was going to build one of those $60 flower pot smoker like Alton Brown but I think I'll just buy this instead.

Thanks everyone for their input.

looks like three are recommended by the collective:
Weber Bullet
Chargrill w/side box
Smoky Mountain Gas Smoker

I'll update as I continue to research.

www.chargriller.com

That's the brand I have and love it. You can use it as a grill and with the side firebox you can smoke foods.

A few months ago I had posted some pics of a prime rib I made on my grill, and you can see some pics of the grill itself. This was before I installed the side firebox, but you can see the grill anyway.

Throw in my vote for the grill w/ side box. I used mine as a grill for a long time. The beauty is that with most of them you can grill in the side box or the grill side. And they are big enough to hold alot of meat.

I eventually bought a weber kettle for my grilling needs and use the other strictly as a smoker.

BEST EVER!!!

The smoker box is a $49 attachment for the side. It comes with pre-seasoned cast iron grates, and an adjustable rack to control your heat (plus a temp. gauge). I've had mine for 3 years now and love it.

Here's another vote for the Smokey Mountain Series. I have the 5 rack Stainless version and I love it! I even take it with camping. It has a large cast brass burner that is extremely efficient. One small tank of propane lasts me a couple of months. It lights easily, maintains temps without adjustment from 225 to 450 degrees. I've baked in it as well.

I have the Smokey Mountain Gas Smoker also and love it. If you plan on doing long smokes for Pork Butt and Beef Brisket (~16hrs) then you'll love this smoker. I've also gotten excellent results from shorter smokes for ribs.

I forgot to mention there is a very good (and very active) yahoo group dedicated to this smoker at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/smokeymountain/

I have a question for those recommending the Smokey Mountain Gas Smoker. How does the resulting smoke flavor compare to that of charcoal smokers?

My local Lowes is clearancing them out now. End of summer is the best time to buy.
