Recommend me a $350-400 unlocked Android phone.

Looking to replace a stolen phone, I don't know much about the current Android scene so not sure what's ok at this price point.

So far I've got my eyes on a Xperia Arc S. Any better phone in the $350-400 (perhaps up to $450 if they're really worth it) no MIRs?

I don't really game on cell phones though I might install one or two games to kill 5 minutes every now and then. Screen should be at least 3.5", I guess that's it. Battery life and no overheating are a plus, though I'm not willing to sacrifice that for too clunky web browsing.

Any recommendations?

In that price range, there's nothing better than a Galaxy S II. Widely popular and very hacker friendly. No locked boot loaders and it's definitely going to get a CM9 ROM faster than other phones.

if you do not demand top-of-the-line specs, you can try using a Samsung Galaxy S... i think its the Captivate for AT&T. or try the Nexus S, since that still has tons of community support and i think it is going to be upgraded to ICS sometime in the future.

or you can just get a used ip4 from ebay or FS/FT for like $300.

Yeah the topic was S2 lol sorry my bad for misreading that someone changed the phone at hand.

The topic of the thread stated nothing about a Galaxy S 2. He just asked for a good off contract phone.
I gave an example.
Unless you're going to be playing 3d games on a phone, honestly, there is no reason for a super high end, just released phone, and this is coming from a Galaxy S 2 owner. I should have just kept my original Galaxy.

Are you f***ing kidding? I got a GS2 a few weeks ago and coming from a GS1 the 2 is soooooo much f***king faster. And I dont mean games, its just so much faster in everything. 15 sec bootups compared to the 2-3 minutes on the GS1 alone are worth the update.

Where can I get an unlocked S2 for that price?

XDA-developers.com is your best bet if you want an unlocked international version. You need to register and look in their for sale section.

You can just get the regular ATT version if you are on ATT (it is locked, but is easily software unlockable I think). Can get one of those anywhere.

I bought a used Captivate (Galaxy S for AT&T) for less than 150 bucks on Ebay in Dec. I love the phone. I love the 4 inch screen that doesn't feel like I am carrying a tablet computer in my pocket. My "used" phone has only 2 of the tiniest scratches in the Gorilla Glass. An official Gingerbread update just came out and I might try that. Others have already rooted and loaded custom ICS ROMs onto it. I've been too busy (and maybe a little scared) to go through the learning process on how to flash custom ROMs. I'm probably not a "super power user" like some on these forums but the Captivate works well for me.

And while my phone has been up for about a month straight without a reboot, on the few times when I have needed to reboot there is no way it takes "2 - 3 minutes" to boot up as mentioned above......

I bought a Fascinate for someone for $100 a few months ago. It is an OK phone. Came with lots of bloatware and the GPS is useless, but otherwise its fine. It has many annoying bugs that I can't believe still are not fixed (in official updates or custom ROMs). i.e. buzzing alarm goes off when the battery is fully charged and won't stop until you unplug the phone. Makes charging the phone at night impossible. Also the screen will stay on the whole time when its done charging (which would cause burn-in on the AMOLED). Makes me happy I didn't go with android for my main phone. It reminds me too much of Windows Mobile 5-6.

My Captivate doesn't have those issues. It did have a cruddy GPS but I found some posts about going into LBSTESTINFO and changing the server and MSASSIST settings and now it works great - locks on in 5-10 seconds while outdoors according to GPSTEST and gets down to 15 ft accuracy (sometimes 30 feet).

Trust me. That didn't fix it. It's still broken. The real test is keeping the lock while moving. And based on your post saying GPS signal was lost and you were rerouted, your GPS isn't "fixed." It's hardware defect. Software fix can only mask it so much.
