I have a friend that was complaining about how long it was taking to compile code and to work on his many programming projects. I was kidding and told him that I would build him something blazing fast with a few gigs of ram and a few high end AMD processors.

I'm not sure what kind of programming he's doing, it's some cad but also lots of java and c++ and sql.

I have build about a dozen systems this year for power uses but they have all be single processor boards with midrange graphics.

Recommendations?

Thanks

Compiling is multithreaded. Go dual processors.

If it has to be one processor, HT wins hands down.

On a budget, go with something like a single P4 w/HT or Dual processor Athlon MP's, if you don't have a budget, go with Dual Opterons.

Ya Althon MPs would be the hot ticket for right now for price vs performance, but the 64bit stuff offers a chance at a much longer life for the computer.(because of RAM upgrades....)

Programming projects, I would assume, are for college students...

Since I'm a college student, and broke (like most others ;)) I would say a P4 with HT would work just fine and dandy...and it wouldn't break his wallet. ;)
