Recommend HSF for 3.2 Prescott in Sonata

In hopes of having a very quiet rig, I talked to a TT rep about what he recommended at a trade show. I ended up with a TT Silent Tower and was disappointed to find that it was by far the loudest thing in my Sonata case.

So I tried the original HSF that came with my 3.2 prescott and was satisfied with the sound levels. However, the idle temps went from 50C to 71C! So, this freaked me out a bit and I started looking at the Zalmans. Would either a 7700 or 7000 fit? My MB:

Looking at the relative closeness to the PS in the Sonata, I'm thinking there is no way the 7700 would fit. Any recommendations, including non-zalman solutions?

The 7000 fit on my Abit IS7 inside a Sonata, which has a similar CPU socket location.

LOL, TT are the last people you would ever want to talk to about silencing a computer. This is the same company that markets a PSU called "Silent Purepower 420" when it sounds like a NASA aircraft-testing wind tunnel.

Unfortunately, of all the CPUs out there, you had to pick one of the hardest CPUs to cool and quiet. PresHotts must die.

The 7700 will NOT fit your mobo. But the Thermalright XP90 should. Couple the XP90 with a quiet fan like the Panaflo L1A/BX, you should have the beginnings of a reasonably quiet computer even with that PresHott.

Thanks for the quick replies guys!

I wish I read anandtech more before talking to TT. Not wanting to start a flamewar, but now I know a lot more about the reputations of certain companies.

Now given a choice between the 7000 and the XP90, which one is more quiet and which would cool better? BTW, I don't overclock. Where would you buy it? I noticed that SVC no longer has it's sale on the XP90. :(

If you're not overclocking you won't notice the difference. I'd get the Zalman, but that's personal preference.

A Zalman 7000 is adequate for a Northwood, but you really should get something with more oomph for a PresHott. There are no heatsinks with lower thermal resistance than the XP90 (except its bigger brother, the XP120, which will probably not fit your board/case), and that would be the better choice for PresHotts.

Have you installed the second 120mm fan? It isn't in the best place, but it blows the heat from your vid card away from your processor and gets the air moving in the case a lot more than without it.

And I wouldn't worry about hurting too many people's feelings with talking about thermalcrap.

Tried wiping off the crappy factory thermal pad and installed AS5. Damn, it took 20 degrees off the temperature! I see that SVC has a special code to get that XP-90 for $25 still so I'll probably try it out! Thanks guys!

If you choose the Zalman 7000 AlCu, Amazon.com has pretty good prices on these sometimes. I purchased two from them for around $28 apiece. They're pretty good coolers and very quiet.
