Recommend good ski resort in Tahoe

Chunkee

Never been there. Looking for decent but not elite place to stay and ski for about 3 days.

Thanks for the help.

Heavenly Valley - slightly biased - put in a ski lift engine there. Free skiing.

I've only been once and went to Boreal (sp?). I'm only an average boarder and don't do anything difficult and it was good enough for me. They also have a park area and night skiing.

Squaw, Incline Village, Heavenly, all fun.. there are ALOT more out there but those were my faves.

Boreal is terrible, it's like some guy found a hill, put 3 ski lifts on it and calls it a resort. Personally I like Northstar at Tahoe and a quick drive to Reno (30 minutes or so) for a place to stay and casinos.

I'm pretty fond of Northstar and Sierra at Tahoe. If you are on a budget, I'd suggest Donner Ski Ranch over Boreal. The nice thing about Donner is that since its one of the first resorts you'll see off the 80, it can be a bit more accessible in inclement weather than the others.

I find Kirkwood to be the best and not too crowded.

I found Heavenly to be crowded and ICY. But maybe it's fine now due to the storms.

Good to know. Since I didn't go to any other resorts I thought that's what Tahoe was all about. I guess I already had low expectations since none of the peaks are within 5000 feet of the small ones in Colorado. Based on Boreal I never wanted to go back to Tahoe but I think I'll reconsider. My next trip will still be back to Colorado though.

Boreal is advertised as the cheapest closest place to ski, no one ever claimed it was even remotely close to the best. Go to Squaw Valley, where they held the winter olympics in 1960, or Heavenly, or Northstar, or one of the several other great mountains in the area.

If you're staying South Shore, then Heavenly and Sierra at Tahoe are your best bets. Squaw Valley isn't too far away if you want to make the drive. Staying at any of the casinos is fine (Harrah's, Harvey's, Caesars).

Another thing you could do is stay in Tahoe City, lot closer to Squaw and Northstar and Alpine Meadows. Reno is between 35-50 minutes away. Believe me, after a day in the snow the last thing you want to do is drive someplace far.

Nice alternative is Homewood. Doesn't get as packed as the busy resorts and the view of the lake is incredible.

Do Northstar. They've had close to 15 feet of fresh powder in the past week and it's awesome. The ski-in/out places are nice too. They're located right on the hill and you can literally ski into them and ski out in the morning and jump on a lift. It's also less expensive than Squaw Valley which makes it nice. If you are a good skier, you have to try their Lookout Mountain lift.

if you stay at the casino they have cheap charters to the major resorts and heavenly has a gondola that takes you to the lifts.
